WORCESTER, Mass. - Highlighted by a gold medal performance by the No. 2 varsity eight boat, the Boston University women's lightweight rowing team competed at the prestigious Eastern Sprints on Sunday.

In addition to winning gold in the varsity eight grand final, the Terriers also won silver in the third varsity eight grand final and bronze in the lightweight double competition. The Terrier earned 40 points on the day, just one point behind the Wisconsin Badgers who won the Ulbrich Trophy as overall regatta points championship for the second-consecutive year.

"I'm proud of the team effort today," said lightweight rowing head coach Malcolm Doldron after the race. "It was great to see the 3V8 race hard and make it on to the podium. It's a crew full of freshman and walk-on athletes so it's great to know that we've got some depth."

"The V8 had a few returners from last year's crew that were shutout of the medals at Sprints.  They remembered how it felt to come up short and were not going to be denied this time.  We knew we have great 2nd 1k and executed it beautifully today."

HOW IT HAPPENED
In the last race of the day for the lightweights, the varsity eight grand final, the BU V8 battled Princeton for much of the race as the two crews separated from the rest of the pack. The BU 1V, coxed by Katie Barnett and stroked by Riona McCormick, pulled ahead of Princeton by a length over the second 1000 meters and held on to the lead down the stretch, winning by over four seconds. The Terriers finished with a winning time of 6:54.56, well ahead of second-place Princeton (7:00.95), Wisconsin (7:04.99), Georgetown (7:07.99) and Harvard (7:08.38).
