2018 Scarlet Key

Eight Terriers Receive Scarlet Key Award

May 18, 2018

BOSTON – Seven Boston University student-athletes were among the graduating BU seniors honored with a Scarlet Key in honor of their service to the BU community. The Scarlet Key is one of BU's highest academic honors. This year's recipients were inducted in an annual tapping ceremony at the George Sherman Union Metcalf Ballroom on Thursday evening.

The Scarlet Key Awards acknowledge the curricular and extracurricular achievements of the students who are nominated. Scarlet Key recipients are nominated by faculty and staff and are evaluated in five areas: leadership, commitment, representation, tradition and academics.

Of the 25 total seniors at Boston University inducted into the Scarlet Key Honor Society, seven were student-athletes. The recipients this year were Andrew Hoang (men's soccer), Justin Flynn (men's tennis), Erin Neville (women's soccer), Conor Okmin (men's lacrosse), Kali Shumock (field hockey), Lizzie Tillo (women's swimming and diving) and Jack Wilson (men's lacrosse).

Hoang's impact on the Terriers stretched beyond the box score, as he committed himself to running the scout team at practice and switched to the midfield to better serve the team. A three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, Hoang also started the first-annual BostonHacks, where students program for 24 hours straight, and was involved with several computer engineering organizations throughout his tenure at BU.

Neville was a consistent presence on the field for the Terriers throughout her tenure, appearing in 80 games with seven starts. Neville tied for the team lead this season with five assists was part a part of two Patriot League championship squads. Off the field, she was integral in organizing the women soccer team's Kick Out Cancer game, which raise over $1400 for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Okmin, the John B. Simpson Award winner for enthusiasm and leadership, was a three-year captain for the men's lacrosse team. In addition to his hard work in the defensive midfield for the Terriers, Okmin was an outstanding presence within the community. He worked tirelessly as an on-campus facilitator for the One Love Foundation, which raises awareness about the warning signs of relationship violence.

Shumock saved her best season for last, tallying 16 points on three goals and led the Patriot League with 10 assists, as BU captured the 2017 Patriot League tournament title for the third time in four years. A NFHCA All-Northeast Region First Team honoree, Shumock additionally collected All-Patriot League First Team and Academic Team honors.

A three-time team captain of the women's diving team, Tillo exemplified leadership in and out of the pool. The 2015 Patriot League Diver of the Meet consistently placed on the boards throughout her four seasons in Boston and served as the SAAC President this past year.

Wilson led by example both on the field and in the classroom. A two-time All-Patriot League honoree, Wilson finished his impressive collegiate career with a 60-game point streak and was the first player in program history to score 100 goals. Wilson will graduate as the program's all-time leader in points and was a three-time Academic All-Patriot League selection.

Along with the seven student-athletes, women's hockey head coach Brian Durocher was awarded an Honorary Scarlet Key. The Honorary Scarlet Key Award is presented to alumni, faculty, staff, trustees, and members of the community-at-large who, during their time at BU, have especially influenced the intellectual and personal development of BU students.

Durocher has been at the helm of the women's ice hockey program since its inaugural season in 2005-06. Recently completing his 13th season behind the Terrier bench, Durocher has won more than 250 games and has averaged over 20 wins per season at BU. He has guided the Terriers to six NCAA Tournament appearances, five Hockey East tournament titles, two league regular-season crowns and a trip to the national title game in 2011 and 2013. In addition, Durocher has won a record 22 Hockey East playoff games.
