Lightweights Win Silver at IRAs

WEST WINDSOR, NJ -
Highlighted by a silver-medal performances in the varsity eight grand final, the Boston University women's lightweight rowing team competed in an abbreviated IRA National Championship Regatta on Sunday.

At the completion of the eights grand finals, the regatta was canceled by IRA official due to deteriorating weather conditions.

VARSITY EIGHT

• In Sunday's varsity eight grand final, the No. 2 varsity eight boat took on No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 Princeton, No. 4 Wisconsin, No. 6 Georgetown and No. 7 MIT under increasingly windy conditions on Lake Mercer.
• In the grand final, old foe Stanford got out to an early lead ahead of BU with Princeton in third place. Stanford stretched the lead to four seats over the Terriers at the 500 meter mark and held a half-length lead at the 1000m point. BU tried to make a move on the Cardinal with 500 meters to go but Stanford answered and won the championship by a full length with a time of 6:40.82. BU won silver with a time of 6:42.79 followed by Princeton (6:43.27) and Georgetown (6:44.34).
• This was the third-consecutive year the Terriers' V8 finished as national runner-up to Stanford at the IRAs.

REGATTA CANCELED
• At the completion of the morning varsity eight grand finals, the competition was canceled due to deteriorating weather conditions that made the course unsafe to row.
 
VARSITY FOUR
C - Antonella Kugler, 4 - Tamara Gelfman, 3 - Amy Connell, 2 - Samantha Wapner, 1 - Tenaya McCoy)
• On Sunday the varsity four grand final was canceled due to weather.
• On Saturday, the BU V4 boat raced in a heat race to determine lane assignments and finished fourth with a time of 7:46.02, ahead of Princeton (7:49.36) and MIT (7:52.53) and behind Stanford (7:21.81), Wisconsin (7:32.35) and Goergetown (7:36.12).
 
LIGHTWEIGHT DOUBLE

• On Sunday, the lightweight doubled petite final was canceled due to weather.
• The lightweight double raced in a morning heat race on Saturday needing to finish first to advance directly to the grand finals. The 2x finished third in its heat and moved on to the repachage. In the repechage, the Terriers needed to finish in the top four to advance to the grand final but finished sixth with a time of 8:19.37.
