No. 19 Terriers Edged by No. 25 Maine, 2-1

BOSTON - Freshman Casey Thompson scored her second goal of the season, but the No. 19 Boston University field hockey team was edged by No. 25 Maine, 2-1, on Friday night at New Balance Field.

The Black Bears recorded only two shots on goal but scored on both of them to improve to 2-0 on the year. BU suffered its first loss of the year and now stands at 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Maine converted on its first corner of the contest at 6:53 of the first half to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Terriers nearly answered when sophomore Maggie New was open in front of the Black Bear cage, but the ball hopped over her stick at the last second.
  • BU forced Mia Borley into three saves during the opening 35 minutes and outshot the Black Bears, 4-2, in the first half.
  • The Terriers defended four corners in the second stanza to keep the deficit at just one entering the final 15 minutes of regulation, but Riley Field pushed the Maine advantage to 2-0 with 14:38 on the clock.
  • A terrific individual effort by senior Ally Hammel led to a BU corner with less than 11 minutes remaining, and Hammel nearly got a goal back on the ensuing play. She created space for herself in the circle, but her shot was deflected wide by a Maine defender.
  • Moments later, sophomore Ailsa Connolly came close to getting the Terriers on the board with a shot that whistled just wide.
  • Then, with 4:57 to play, Thompson cashed in on a corner when she knocked home a rebound at the right post off a shot by senior Kara Enoch
  • Senior Allie Doggett dashed to the cage and earned a corner with 2:00 to play, but BU was unable to capitalize.

GAME NOTES

  • BU outshot Maine, 9-5, though the Black Bears earned six corners to just four for the Terriers.
  • Sophomore Miya Denison led the Terriers with three shots, two of which were on target.
