Late Spurt Pushes No. 24 Ohio State Past No. 19 Field Hockey, 4-2

BOSTON - A late three-goal spurt by visiting Ohio State proved to be the difference on Monday afternoon as the No. 19 Boston University field hockey team dropped a 4-2 contest to the No. 24 Buckeyes at New Balance Field.

Sophomore Ailsa Connolly scored both BU goals with the latter giving the Terriers a 2-1 lead in the 50th minute. Both teams are now 2-2 following Monday's result.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Ohio State earned the first corner of the game and capitalized on it with Casey Cole firing from the top of the circle off a direct insert from Emma Goldean just 4:11 into the contest.
  • BU got an equalizer before the half off a restart as junior Kiley Gallagher found Connolly at the right post and the sophomore tipped it in with 13:36 left in the opening half.
  • The Terriers gained the lead off a corner with 20:47 left in regulation.
  • After providing the insert, Connolly got in position at the left post, where senior Ally Hammel found her for a redirect and a 2-1 advantage.
  • Less than a minute later, Cole struck again for the visitors, finding space on the right side of the circle before firing a shot through traffic that got past BU netminder Livy Golini.
  • The Buckeyes took the lead for good with goals 20 seconds apart in the 54th minute.
  • Sammy Stone provided what would be the game-winner at 53:20 when she found the back of the cage off a pass by Esther Clotet Alsina.
  • Just seconds later, Jessica Hourihane pounced on a deflected shot near the right post and tucked it past Golini to make it a two-goal lead for the Buckeyes.
  • The Terriers pulled Golini in favor of an extra attacker and earned four corners in the final 12 minutes but could not put another shot past the OSU defense.
