Terriers Draw at American, 1-1, in 2OT Patriot League Opener

WASHINGTON – Taking on American in its Patriot League opener, the Boston University women's soccer team needed overtime for the fourth time this season as it drew a 1-1- double overtime decision Sunday afternoon at Reeves Field.

American scored on a penalty kick just over a minute into the game before Anna Heilferty tied the matchup with her team-best third score of the season. From there, the Terriers held a 23-8 advantage in shots, including a 16-4 command in shots on goal, but the Eagles held on for the tie.

How It Happened
  • American's Yari Bradford delivered her league-leading sixth goal of the season just one minute and 17 seconds, sending a penalty kick just inside the left post.
  • Heilferty, playing just 10 miles from her hometown, collected a through ball from Chelsea Churchill from 15 yards out and buried it into the back of the net to knot the score in the 8th minute.
  • Libby Closson nearly gave BU the lead in the closing minutes of the half, as Ann Marie Jaworski crossed in a feed right inside the six-yard box, but Closson's shot veered high of the frame.
  • The Terriers came out on the attack to open the second frame, launching four shots on goal within the first 10 minutes.
  • McKenna Kennedy and Jenna Oldham each had quality looks on net within the last three minutes, but couldn't push one past the keeper as BU headed into overtime for the third time in the last eight contests.
  • After a scorelss opening frame of extra time, Taylor Kofton nearly ended the game as she directed a header on frame just three minutes into the second overtime, but it bounced off the right post.
  • BU wouldn't get another quality look as it split a point with the Eagles.
