The Terriers are looking to rejoin the race for home ice in the Hockey East playoffs while the Huskies are trying to get in contention for the final playoff spot. BU topped UConn, 3-2, earlier this season in the opening round of the Friendship Four in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Each of the past four BU/UConn games have been decided by a single goal.
The Terriers and Huskies have had 13 prior meetings and BU is 8-3-2 in them. BU is 3-2 in the five meetings that have taken place at XL Center.
The teams met in the Hockey East quarterfinals last March with BU posting a sweep with narrow 5-4 (ot) and 2-1 victories. They have split their league series in each of the past three seasons, including a 1-1-1 tally last season.
After enduring a 12-game winless streak (0-11-1) in Hockey East play, UConn has strung together back-to-back wins against Northeastern and Merrimack to move into 10th place in the league standings. The Huskies were 5-4-1 after 10 games but are 4-13-1 since.
Senior Karl El-Mir has a team-best 25 points on 12 goals and 13 assists while freshman Jáchym Kondelík is right behind with 24 points on the strength of a squad-high 20 assists. Junior Alexander Payusov is one of the top goal-scorers in Hockey East with 14 on the year in addition to four assists.
Junior Adam Huska (5-12-2, .899, 3.25) has spent roughly two-thirds of the time in the UConn net with freshman Tomáš Vomácka (4-5-0, .913, 2.50) in goal the other third.
Junior Jake Oettinger made 39 saves and sophomore Ty Amonte scored the game-winner early in the third to lift BU to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over UConn in the Friendship Four. BU erased deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 with goals from junior Patrick Curry and sophomore Logan Cockerill. Amonte scored at 2:39 of the third and Oettinger made 16 of his 29 saves in the final period.
BU closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 5-2 loss to No. 18/15 Harvard in the Beanpot consolation game on Monday at TD Garden. Curry and Gabriel Chabot each scored for the Terriers while Frederic Gregoire tallied two goals, including the game-winner, for the Crimson.
Four Terriers - Shane Bowers, Bobo Carpenter, Curry and Joel Farabee - share the team lead in goals with 10 apiece. BU is one of just six teams in the nation to have four scorers with 10 or more goals, joining Michigan, Minnesota, Penn State, Massachusetts and St. Cloud State.
BU's penalty kill has successfully killed off 30 of its opponents past 31 power plays, including a stretch of 26 straight, which was the program's longest such streak since a string of 27 straight that ended on March 24, 2017. With its recent success, the Terriers' penalty kill has moved up to 17th in the nation at 84 percent.
The Terriers and Huskies will complete their season series on Saturday (Feb. 16) at Agganis Arena. Game time is 7 p.m. There will be a postgame autograph session and city of Boston residents will have an unprecedented opportunity to cheer on the Terriers for free. (Register Here)
