BOSTON – The Boston University men's ice hockey team had its run of four straight Beanpot title game appearances come to an end on Monday as No. 13 Northeastern scored 51 seconds into overtime to take a 2-1 semifinal victory at TD Garden.
Junior
Jake Oettinger was phenomenal in goal for the Terriers, making 47 saves – all in succession – as the Huskies scored on their first and last shots of the night.
Freshman
Joel Farabee scored BU's lone goal, tying the game late in the opening period. The Terriers now stand at 10-12-3 on the season while Northeastern improves to 16-8-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers committed a costly turnover in the early stages as sophomore Cam Crotty was hooked from behind in the BU zone, resulting in a goal in the slot from a wide-open Patrick Schule at 3:14 of the first.
- After coming up short on back-to-back power plays, BU was able to get an equalizer before the end of the opening period.
- Sophomore Shane Bowers prevented the Huskies from clearing the puck and pushed it to the left point, where Crotty flung it to the end boards. While parallel to the goal at the right post Farabee corralled the carom and put the puck off NU net minder Cayden Primeau and in with 21 ticks left in the first.
- Farabee had two chances to put BU ahead in the second off breakaways but Primeau was up the task each time.
- Oettinger was also impressive in the middle period, using his pad to stop a redirect at the goalmouth before adding a save off a breakaway.
- The Huskies pressured Oettinger and the Terrier defense throughout the third, putting up 24 shots in the frame and earning two power plays, but BU stood tall.
- A hitting from behind call draw by sophomore Logan Cockerill with 2:23 left in regulation gave the Terriers a chance at a late winner, but Primeau made three saves on what would be a successful NU kill.
- Jeremy Davies forced a turnover in the early moments of overtime and hit Tyler Madden for a breakaway that he converted on a shot that went off Oettinger's left elbow and in.
