LOWELL, Mass. - The Boston University men's ice hockey team fell to UMass Lowell, 6-4, on Saturday evening in the second game of their Hockey East quarterfinal series at Tsongas Center.
After spotting the River Hawks a 3-0 lead after one, BU clawed back and got with one at 4-3 and then went in the locker room down 5-4 after two. Lowell scored early in the third and hung on to force a third game on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU took the first penalty of the game and the River Hawks capitalized off a center-point shot by Chase Blackmun.
- Later in the opening period, Lowell had a 5-on-3 power play for 55 seconds and bumped their lead to 2-0 at 11:32 just as the first penalty expired.
- Just over a minute later, Kenny Hausinger gave the River Hawks a three-goal cushion with a high blocker side wrister from the top of the slot.
- The Terriers' first power play of the night started in the final moments of the first and they cashed in on it later in the second on a redirect by Curry at the right post from an offering at the top of the zone by sophomore David Farrance.
- Ryan Dmowski reestablished a three-goal goal lead for UMass Lowell at 3:28 of the middle stanza with his second goal of the game.
- BU grabbed the momentum by scoring a delayed-penalty goal and then converting on the ensuing power play.
- Crotty scored his second goal of the weekend at 7:49 with the extra attacker before Farabee sniped a shot to the back of the net on the power play just 43 seconds later to make it a 4-3 affair.
- Reid Stefanson provided what would be the game-winner moments later to make the score 5-3 in the River Hawks' favor.
- With the Terriers on the penalty kill, Farabee broke up a play at the top of the zone and went the distance, converting a shorthanded breakaway to make it 5-4 with 5:32 remaining the second.
- Early the in third, Nick Master punched in a deflected puck by the right crease to give Lowell a 6-4 advantage and prevent the Terriers from carrying over their momentum from the second.
GAME NOTES
- Farabee now leads all Hockey East players in shorthanded goals this season with three.
- The Terriers held a 31-25 shot advantage.
- Lowell went 3-for-5 on the power play while BU was 2-for-4 on the man advantage.
- BU gave up as many power plays goals on Saturday than it had in its previous 15 games combined.
- Junior Jake Oettinger made 19 saves while Tyler Wall turned aside 27 BU shots for Lowell.
- This was only Oettinger's second loss in nine career starts in the Hockey East playoffs.
