BOSTON - The No. 2Â Boston University women's lightweight rowing team continued its 2019 spring season on Saturday, sweeping two-time defending division III national champion Bates on the Charles River.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Racing on a very calm Charles River, the Terriers' 1VÂ started out fast and pulled away from Bates over the first half of the race. Coxed by
Antonella Kugler and stroked byÂ
Izzy Bichler, the 1VÂ cruised to victory with a winning time of 6:50.32, well ahead of the Bates varsity eight boat (7:01.87).

Earlier in the morning, the lightweight 2V also cruised to victory. Coxed by
Katie Barnett and stroked by
Samantha Wapner, the 2V8 jumped out to an early lead and won by open water with a time of 7:02.21, six seconds ahead of Bates (7:08.13).Â

In the first race of the morning, the third varsity eight boat was also victorious. Coxed byÂ

Helen Haley, the 3V8 got things started on the right foot for BU, winning bu open water and leading BU to a sweep on the day.

The BU lightweights will next compete at the 2019 Knecht Cup in Mercer Country, N.J. on April 13th and 14th, looking to defend their lightweight V8 Knecht Cup title.Â
