No. 3 Lightweights Win Three Gold Medals at Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Highlighted by a gold-medal victory by the No. 3 ranked varsity eight boat, the Boston University's women's lightweight rowing team won three gold medals at the Dad Vail Regatta which concluded Saturday in Philadelphia, Pa.
 
Competing against openweight competition, the BU lightweights advanced all four boats to the grand finals and won gold in the V8, V4 and 2x competition. With its victory in the varsity eight grand final, the Terriers took home the Evelyn Bergman Trophy as the Dad Vail women's varsity eight champions for the second-consecutive year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Varsity Eight
In Friday's time trial contest, the No. 3 ranked lightweight varsity eight boat competed against a large field of 18 openweight crews. The 1V, coxed by Katie Barnett and stroked by Janice Hagerman, finished second in a field of 23 openweight boats with a time of 6:31.26 to move on to the semi-finals. In its semifinals race, the 1V8 finished first with a time of 7;15.34, well ahead of second-place Georgetown (7:24.51). In the grand finals, the 1V won gold with a time of 6:13.67, finishing in front of crews from Drexel (6:17.13), Georgetown "A" (6:18.61), Bucknell (6:18.65) Temple (6:24.30) and Georgetown "B" (6:29.72). 
 
With the win, the Terriers took home the Evelyn Bergman Trophy as the Dad Vail women's varsity eight champions for the second-consecutive year. 
 
Varsity Four
On Friday, the BU varsity four, coxed by Antonella Kugler and stroked by Tamara Gelfman, finished first in its time trial with a time of 7:14.690 in a large field of 28 openweight boats and advanced to the semi-finals. In the semis, the V4 finished first in its race with a time of 7:52.52, ahead of Drexel (8:06.80), UMass (8:16.52) and Georgia Tech (8:16.55) and moved on to the grand finals. In the grand finals, the V4 cruised to gold by open water with a time of 6:57.74, ahead of Lafayette (7:03.98), Grand Valley (7:03.98) and Temple (7:10.21).
 
2x "A" 
In doubles heat racing on Friday, the BU "A", made up Riona McCormick and Catharine Griskowitz, finished first in a field of six with a time of 8:30.62 to advance to the grand final on Saturday. In the grand final, the 2x "A" finished first to win gold with a time of 7:15.19, well ahead of second-place Georgetown (7:18.57). 
 
2x "B"
In its 2x heat on Friday the 2x "B", made up of Karsen Healy and Helen Haley, finished second with a time of 8:50.74 and moved on to Sunday's grand final. In the grand final, the 2x "B" finished third with a time of 7:26.27 to win bonze ahead of MIT (7:26.27), Tampa (7:54.97) and Bucknell "B" (8:06.51).
