GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The No. 3 Boston University lightweight rowing team will compete at the 117th IRA National Championship Regatta beginning Saturday, June 1 in Gold River, Calif. The Terriers will send out three boats to compete for a national title over a two-day period in a field of seven schools.
Â
The BU lightweights will look to build on last year's performance at an abbreviated IRAs when they won silver in the varsity eight grand final, finishing behind IRA National Champion Stanford for the third-consecutive year. At the completion of the eights grand finals last year, the regatta was canceled by IRA official due to deteriorating weather conditions.
Â
Coming off a first-place finish at the Dad Vail Regatta on May 11, the Terriers' varsity eight boat is seeded No. 3 behind archrival and No. 1 ranked Stanford and No. 2 ranked Princeton. The V8 will compete in its first race on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. EST (8:00 am PDT) when they take on No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 Princeton, No. 4 Harvard, No. 5 Wisconsin, No. 6 Georgetown and No. 7 MIT. The morning race will only determine the lanes of the grand final with all boats advancing to the championship race on Sunday at 1:40 pm EST.
Â
Coming off a gold-medal performance at both the Dad Vail Regatta and Eastern Sprints on May 5, the Terriers' varsity four boat will compete in an unseeded morning race at 11:12 am. against Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Georgetown and Wisconsin. The morning race will also be to determine the lanes of the final with all participating boats advancing to the finals on Sunday morning at 11:42 am EST.
Â
BU will also race in the women's lightweight double competition on Saturday against Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Georgetown and Wisconsin beginning at 11 am. The six boat race also will be for lanes assignments in Sunday's finals which is scheduled for at 1:40 pm EST.Â
