Men's Soccer Edged in Season Opener at New Hampshire, 1-0

DURHAM, N.H. – Making his debut in the scarlet and white, junior goalkeeper Michael Stone recorded 10 saves, but it wasn't enough, as defending America East champion New Hampshire used a 23rd minute goal to defeat the Boston University men's soccer team, 1-0, on Thursday night at Wildcat Stadium.

UNH (1-0) improved to 21-1-3 at home over its last 25 contests by pressuring the Terriers (0-1) from one side of the field to the other and allowed just five shot attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • One minute after Stone made his first stop at 2:20, the Terriers earned the game's first corner kick, but senior Satchel Cortet was pressured into sailing a shot attempt high over the crossbar.
  • Sophomore and 2018 All-PL honoree Kari Petursson curled a 30-yard free kick at the far post to force a diving save by Alejandro Robles.
  • The Wildcats earned back-to-back corner kicks in the 22nd and 23rd minutes to set up the go-ahead goal.
  • Fabian Lutz collected the second corner and rifled a low shot attempt near the top of the box to prompt a diving save by Stone before Chris Arling one-timed the rebound into the back of the net.
  • Senior Matt McDonnell had BU's best look of the game in the 37th minute when he managed to put a header on a long service pass into the box, but Robles was in perfect position for the near point-blank save.
  • UNH went into the locker room ahead, 1-0, with a 10-4 lead in shot attempts after fending off two free kicks in the final minute.
  • The Terriers were able to beat UNH's defensive pressure with multiple long passes up the field during the second half, but once they were in the box, they managed just one shot off the foot of Miles Dycaico at 68:24 for the shutout loss.
GAME NOTES
  • UNH finished with a 16-5 lead in shots and 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
  • McDonnell made his first appearance for the Terriers after suffering a season-ending injury at Dartmouth last year in which he netted his sixth goal in five games to open the 2018 season.
  • Freshman Florian Rieder, junior Zion Balogun and sophomore Evan Morrison joined Stone in earning their first-career starts at BU.
  • Now in his 35th season at the helm, head coach Neil Roberts moved to 17-9-7 all-time against the former America East foe.
  • UNH won the last meeting between the two teams in 2012 in the Terriers' last AE contest, 1-0, with a golden goal.
NEXT UP: BOSTON COLLEGE
  • The Terriers will open a BU soccer doubleheader and the 13th annual Terrier Tailgate on Sunday (Sept. 1) against rival Boston College.
  • Gates will open at 3 p.m. with the contest slated to begin at 4 p.m. and the women's matchup against Michigan State set for 7 p.m.
  • McDonnell earned the Terriers' first hat trick in a decade last season at BC for the 3-3 draw.
  • A Massachusetts collegiate soccer record 7,379 fans came out to watch the last Terrier Tailgate battle between BU and BC in 2015, as the Eagles escaped with a 3-2 victory.
