Woodland's Late-Game Header Pushes Terriers Past URI, 1-0

BOSTON – For the second straight game, the Boston University women's soccer team worked its late-game magic, this time using a header from Sophia Woodland in the 82nd minute to shut out Rhode Island, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

Working off a corner kick by Kelly Park, Woodland flicked her first career goal just inside the right post, leading BU to a shutout of the Rams in the first meeting between the schools in a decade.

How It Happened
  • URI got the first shots of the game off in the 9th and 15th minute, though Ashley Buck stepped in to block both to diffuse the pressure.
  • The Rams tested the backline once again in the 22nd minute, driving a shot on frame from the left side of the 18-yard box, where Fay elevated for the full-extension save.
  • BU started to ramp up the pressure as the first half wore on. Geo Pereira flicked a header in the 27nd minute before Ashley Raphael followed five minutes later with a one-timer on frame, but neither had enough steam to reach the back of the net.
  • Shannon Keefe caused havoc in URI's defensive third to start the second half, nearly breaking through with a shot from 20 yards out that sailed just over the crossbar.
  • Pereira flicked another pair of one-timers in the 55th minute, but each just missed landing within frame.
  • Amanda Fay made a spectacular fingertip save in the 78th minute to keep the game scoreless.
  • Working off its fifth corner kick of the second half, the Terriers finally slotted one into the back of the net, marking the second straight game a freshman has netted the game-winning goal.
Game Notes
  • Three of BU's four goals on the season have been scored in the second half.
  • Furthermore, all four goals have been scored by underclassmen.
  • Fay earned her first win and shutout of the season, making three saves over 90 minutes in between the pipes.
  • The Terrier backline limited the Rams to just nine shots, marking the second time this season the defense has limited an opponent to single digit shots.
  • BU improved to 8-2 all-time against URI.
