BOSTON – Welcoming American for its Patriot League opener, the Boston University women's soccer team's offense exploded as it cruised to a 4-1 victory in its Patriot League opener Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
Shannon Keefe netted her second career brace, finding the back of the net in each half, while
Margaret Berry and
Ashley Raphael also got on the scoreboard as the Terriers registered their third straight win.
During halftime, over 60 alumni of the program were welcomed to Nickerson Field as part of BU's 25th season anniversary celebration. Special recognition was given to the 2000 team, BU's first conference championship team.
How It Happened
- American had chances early on, getting the first shot of the game in the 5th minute that Morgan Messner easily scooped up.
- From there, the Terriers took control of the game, possessing the midfield as it worked its way towards American's defensive third.
- Anna Heilferty fed a corner kick into the box in the 13th minute, where it grazed off Keefe and a pair of Eagle defenders.
- With the ball bouncing back towards Keefe, the senior took a one-time jab at the ball from just inside the 18, pounding it inside the left post.
- BU took advantage of another set piece right before the half as Caitlyn DiSarcina hustled to get a corner kick off with six seconds left.
- Margaret Berry charged towards the feed and headed in her first career goal with one second left, sending the Terriers into the break with a 2-0 advantage.
- Not wasting time getting back of the board, Keefe and Chloee Sagmoe worked a give-and-go, with Keefe finishing in traffic to extend the lead to 3-0 in the 54th minute.
- The Eagles broke the shutout in the 69th minute, slipping in a loose ball inside the six-yard box off a corner kick.
- However, Raphael would make it a three-goal game again in the 82nd minute, heading in a beautiful feed from Heilferty that landed just under the crossbar.
Game Notes
- BU improved to 4-2-1 in Patriot League openers.
- Additionally, the Terriers continued to dominate American, scoring at least a trio of goals against the Eagles for the fourth time in the eight-game series.
- BU increased its scoring advantage in the series to 20-3.
- Each of Raphael's goals have come with less than 10 minutes left in the game, as her first goal of the season was scored in the 82nd minute.
