Terriers Hold 36-Hole Lead at Kiawah Island Classic

March 2, 2020

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Competing in the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country, the Boston University golf team has the lead after 36 holes of the Kiawah Island Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston at Oak Point GC.

BU holds a five-shot lead over second-place Florida Gulf Coast (580) and third-place College of Charleston (582) thanks to a two-day total of 575 (289-286). The host Cougars are ranked 58th on Golfstat, one of two teams in the field ranked in the top 100.

That score of 575 shatters the Terriers' previous 36-hole record of 595, which they set at the 2014 Dartmouth Invitational, while Monday's team score is also a new program record, one better than their 287 at the 2018 Yale Intercollegiate.

Freshman Alice Fan continued her impressive collegiate debut, posting a two-under 70 to finish the day tied for second at 141 (71-70). Fan has posted back-to-back under-par rounds in her first-ever tournament as a Terrier, sinking four more birdies on Monday after totaling six on Sunday. Fan enters Tuesday's final round just one shot behind the leader.

Junior Katerina Doleckova put together the best performance of her BU career on Monday, firing a three-under 69 to end the day tied for sixth (74-69--143). Doleckova bested her previous collegiate low by three strokes thanks to four birdies and just one bogey. She is one-under for the tournament and three shots back of the leader.

Sophomore Hanako Kawasaki turned in another one-over 73 on Monday and is tied for 21st at 146. Freshman Kristen Min Ju Kim (71-76) is tied for 27th at 147 while senior Zhangcheng Guo (76-74) is tied for 62nd in the 264-player field at 150.

The Terriers combined for 15 birdies on Monday after totaling 20 on Sunday. Fan is second among all players with 10 birdies. Kawasaki is four-under on the par-5s while Doleckova has played the par-3s at two-under.

BU will tee off Tuesday morning with a chance for its second tournament title of the 2019-20 season. The Terriers were victorious at the William & Mary Invitational in September.
