Women's Basketball Opens PL Tournament With Quarterfinal Matchup vs. American Monday

BOSTON - After posting its best Patriot League regular season ever, the Boston University women's basketball team will open up the postseason at Case Gym on Monday, March 9 as it welcomes American for a Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal matchup. Opening tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. and can be seen live on the Patriot League Network.

TOURNEY TIME

  • BU finished as the No. 2 seed, its highest seed ever in the Patriot League Tournament.
  • The Terriers clinched their first 12-win season in Patriot League play since joining the conference in 2013.
  • BU earned a first-round bye for the third time in its seven seasons as a member of the league and is hosting a quarterfinal game for the second straight season.
  • The Terriers are 1-6 all-time in the Patriot League Tournament.
  • Its lone win came in its first-ever Patriot League Tournament contest, a 40-35 triumph over Loyola in the first round on March 4, 2014.
TERRIER TIDBITS
  • Maggie Pina highlighted BU's All-Patriot League honors as she was named the first Patriot League Rookie of the Year in program history in addition to earning spots on the second team and all-rookie team.
  • Katie Nelson joined Pina on the all-conference team, earning her third all-league honor, and her first appearance on the second team.
  • Maren Durant and Sydney Johnson secured spots on the all-rookie team, and Durant additionally was recognized on the all-defensive team.
  • BU's three freshmen mark the first time in league history where there members from the same program have been named to the all-rookie team.
  • Home court advantage is crucial for the Terriers as they are 10-5 at Case Gym, which includes an 8-1 mark against conference opponents.
  • The Terriers have won 10 of their last 11 games at home.
SCOUTING AMERICAN
  • After posting back-to-back 20-win seasons, the Eagles are in a down year at 13-16 overall and went 8-10 during the conference slate.
  • American cruised past Navy, 64-53, in the tournament's first round behind 18 points off the bench from Emily Fisher.
  • Kaitlyn Marenyi notched her first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Jade Edwards, who leads the team in scoring (14.5) and rebounding (6.8), also added 14 points
  • Edwards, last year's PL Rookie of the Year, was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team.
  • Marenyi earned a spot on the third team and Indeya Sanders rounded out the all-league selections with a defensive team honor.

THE SERIES

  • American used a 16-0 run between the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth to edge the Terriers, 55-54, in the last matchup Feb. 22 in D.C.
  • The Terriers held American to its lowest scoring total ever in the 19-game series, limiting the Eagles to connect at just 26.0 percent (13-for-50) from the floor as part of a 59-44 victory in the first matchup of the season Jan. 5 in Boston.
  • American is 12-4 against the Terriers since BU joined the Patriot League.

THE POSTSEASON SERIES

  • This will be the third postseason matchup between the Terriers and Eagles.
  • American won the last postseason battle, a quarterfinal matchup in D.C., 57-51 in 2017.
  • The Eagles also ended BU's season the year prior in the first round, 61-53.
