Men's Soccer Rides Rosen's Brace to 2-0 Win over Colgate

BOSTON – Highlighted by sophomore Eitan Rosen's brace, the Boston University men's soccer team opened a two-game homestand with a 2-0 victory over Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

With their third shutout of the season, the Terriers (2-8-2, 2-3-1 PL) earn a much-needed three points to stay alive for one of the six available Patriot League tournament berths. BU dominated possession and finished with a 17-4 advantage in shots against the Raiders (0-14-0, 0-6-0 PL), as junior goalkeeper Francesco Montali needed just one save for the shutout.

The two first-half goals marked the first of Rosen's career, as he became the fifth Terrier to find the back of the net this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU set the tone early in the game, drawing a foul just outside the box in the second minute that led to Colgate's Nick Gerlach stopping junior Quinn Matulis' free kick attempt.
  • Rosen drew the backline out enough by playing the ball back to junior Colin Innes, who then sent it right back inside the box to set up Rosen's high-arching shot aimed at the right post for the 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.
  • Rosen switched positions in terms of staying back but still had the final shot for the second goal at 23:42, as he made a diagonal run at the left corner of the box. He sent a short through ball to junior Ronaldo Marshall, who played it back to the centering Rosen for the 23-yard blast inside the right post.
  • BU was held without a shot the rest of the half but still dominated possession, as the Raiders attempted just two shots in the first half against the Terriers' seven.
  • Trying to added a third goal, freshman Brian Hernandez had three shots in the 52nd minute blocked with his final attempt leading to a corner kick that was eventually cleared by the Raiders.
  • The Terriers earned five corners in the second half to keep the pressure on the Raiders' backline.
  • Trying to mount a late charge, Adam Fam rifled a low shot at the left post, but Montali made a diving save at 88:13 to seal the shutout.
GAME NOTES
  • Rosen earned BU's second brace of the season after Hernandez scored twice at St. John's on Sept. 10. Coincidentally, both men are now tied for second at five points apiece (2g,1a).
  • Marshall moved atop the team lead at six points following his second assist of the season, while Innes also earned his second assist of the year.
  • The Terriers have now won three straight against the Raiders by a combined score of 7-1 and are 9-3-2 all-time in the series.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers will have a quick turnaround and host crosstown rival Northeastern on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
  • BU dropped the last meeting in overtime (1-0) in 2019 at Northeastern.
