LEWISBURG, Pa. – Extending its unbeaten streak to a season-high four games, the Boston University men's soccer team recorded a 0-0 draw at Bucknell on Saturday afternoon.
The contest marked the ninth time in 10 all-time meetings between the two schools to go to overtime and the sixth to end in a tie. Junior
Francesco Montali recorded five saves with the backline adding another to help the Terriers (3-8-3, 2-3-2 PL) claim their fourth shutout of the season, while Bennett Schwartz had one stop for the Bison's fifth shutout.
The Terriers doubled Bucknell in shots in the first half (8-4) and dominated overtime starting in the 94th minute when Schwartz put Bucknell down a man with a second yellow card. BU took four of the extra session's five shots to finish the game with a 16-12 advantage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Montali made the game's first save at 2:04, and the Terriers earned the first corner at 5:48 before Bucknell got the clear.
- The Bison's backline blocked consecutive shots from junior Ronaldo Marshall and junior Colin Innes in the 21st minute.
- Bucknell drew Montali off his line in an attempted clear and managed to take a quick shot past him, but the backline was in position for the kick save to keep the game scoreless at 35:48.
- After Schwartz drew his first yellow at 41:59, junior Quinn Matulis helped BU earn a corner with a blocked shot attempt, but the Bison managed to get another clear.
- Bucknell's Gabe Dahlin hit the post with a header 20 seconds before the buzzer sounded.
- Both keepers started the second half with an early save, and the Bison blocked sophomore Matthew Boberg's shot attempt at 67:33 following the Terriers' corner kick.
- The Terriers earned their eighth corner with a minute left in regulation but were unable to get off a shot to send the contest to OT.
- Schwartz was ejected with his second yellow at 93:45 when he came off his line and knocked down freshman Brian Hernandez, who was trying to pounce on a loose ball outside the box.
- Sophomore Andrew Rent nailed the post in the 98th minute, and classmate Eitan Rosen's header went over the bar at 108:15 for the draw.
GAME NOTES
- BU recorded a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks with a 16-12 lead in shots.
- Innes led all players with three shot attempts.
- Though this was the ninth meeting to go to overtime, this contest was just the second to end in a scoreless draw between the two programs.
