BOSTON, Mass. – For the first time in program history, the Boston University women's basketball team takes on Princeton University, as the Terriers hit the road for the first time this season. Opening tip is set for 1 p.m.
BU lifts the lid on its away slate following its 76-47 triumph over UMass Lowell on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at Case Gym, giving Head Coach Melissa Graces her first win as a Terrier. Sunday marks BU's first non-conference road matchup since Dec. 5, 2019, a span of 708 days.
On the other side, Princeton is back on the court after the Ivy League canceled the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sunday is the Tigers' first home contest since Feb. 29, 2020.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- The Terriers' 29-point win was the largest margin of victory in a season opener since 1977.
- Junior Sydney Johnson led the team with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting, the 11th time in her career she has paced the Terriers on offense.
- Redshirt senior Emily Esposito and junior Maggie Pina each went 3-for-5 from three as BU shot 60 percent form beyond the arc for the first time since 2017.
- For Esposito, it was the most three-pointers she has made in a Terrier uniform after nailing two in all of last season.
- Sophomore Caitlin Weimar posted 12 rebounds, three steals, and block while starting in her BU debut. Senior Riley Childs snagged 10 caroms, the 27th time in her tenure she's reached double figures. The duo became the first pair to corral 10 boards since 2017.
- The Terrier defense forced 23 UMass Lowell turnovers, the most since Colgate gave up the ball 24 times on Jan. 9.
- BU earned 27 points from the bench, led by freshman Alex Giannaros' eight on 4-of-5 shooting and seven from junior Maren Durant.
- Last season, BU was 6-1 on the road. The Terriers have won at least six games away from Case Gym in each of the last four seasons, and are 19-10 in their last 29 road games.
- Sunday is the first of three games against Ivy League opponents for the Terriers. BU hosts Yale on Nov. 24, then heads to Harvard on Nov. 27.
- BU aims to capture its third consecutive win in its road opener. That has not been done since 2006-08.
- This will be BU's first game in the state of New Jersey since Jan. 5, 2003. The Terriers defeated FDU 89-69 on that day.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
- Princeton's duel with BU will be its third game in five days to start the season.
- The Tigers, playing in their first game in 613 days, took down Villanova 59-42 on Wednesday, Nov. 10.
- Abby Meyers dropped a game-high 21 points along with nine rebounds in the win.
- Most recently, PU thwarted Delaware 75-56 on Friday, Nov. 12, highlighted by Julia Cunningham's 26 points.
- Back in 2019-20, Princeton concluded the regular season as Ivy League champions, sporting a 26-1 record while ranking No. 17/No. 21 in the nation.
- That year, the Tigers leading scorer was Bella Alarie, who was later the fifth overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft.
