BOSTON - Ready to kick off the 2021 season, the Boston University women's lacrosse team will visit No. 6 Stony Brook on Sunday, Feb. 21 to start its 41st campaign. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. and can be seen live on AmericaEast.tv.
Sunday will mark the first time in six seasons that BU opens its season versus an opponent other than Boston College. Additionally, it will be the first season-opening matchup against Stony Brook.
Makenzie Irvine is the leading returner in both goals (14) and points (14), and was the only Terrier last season to score in all six games. Ava Barry and Lauren Kaye each slotted seven goals a season ago, while Barry is the second-leading returner in points (9), and Kaye scored in five of six games. Emily Vervlied was named to the Patriot League Preseason All-Conference Team for the second straight year, while the Terriers were predicted to finish fourth in the conference standings.
BU will face Stony Brook for the first time since leaving the America East following the 2013 season. The Terriers dominated the America East, posting a 77-21 (.786) record over 16 seasons as a member of the conference, and went 21-6 (.778) over 15 America East Tournament appearances. BU won nine America East Tournament crowns, including six straight from 2005-10.
Stony Brook has taken the reigns of the America East conference as it has won the last seven conference championships and is on a 42-game win streak against conference opponents. The Seawolves are led by graduate student Ally Kennedy, a two-time IWLCA First Team All-American at the midfield, and the 2021 US Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Player of Year. Joe Spallina is in his 10th season at the helm of the program and is 143-27 (.841) during his tenure, including a remarkable 47-2 (.959) mark in America East play.
