No. 8 Men's Ice Hockey Falls to Merrimack, 5-2

February 26, 2021

BOSTON – The No. 8 Boston University men's ice hockey team had its four-game win streak snapped on Friday as visiting Merrimack topped the Terriers, 5-2, at Walter Brown Arena.

All the goals except for a late empty-netter were scored in the opening period as the Warriors potted three goals in a span of 2:11 to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Tallies by senior David Farrance and junior Matthew Quercia drew BU within a goal at 3-2 but Merrimack quickly regained a multi-goal lead and went on to take the weekend opener.

BU moves to 9-3-0 on the year while Merrimack improves to 5-10-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers came out strong after the opening faceoff but ended up with nothing to show for it and the visitors came alive with a scoring spurt.
  • Regan Kimens opened the scoring at 10:09 of the first when he received a pass in the slot and buried the puck.
  • Just 47 seconds later, the Warriors took advantage of two Terriers skating into each other as Ryan Nolan found Declan Carlile wide open in the right circle for a 2-0 lead.
  • Patrick Holway completed the quick three-goal run when he maneuvered through the right side before beating BU netminder Vinny Duplessis at the 12:20 mark.
  • Drew Commesso came on in relief of Duplessis and the Terriers responded with a pair of goals 91 seconds apart to get back into the contest.
  • Farrance collected a faceoff win by sophomore Jay O'Brien and shifted off the left point before firing a wrister from the high slot that found the back of the net just 27 ticks after the third Merrimack goal.
  • Moments later, a left-point effort by sophomore Alex Vlasic was tipped in by Quercia above the crease to make it a 3-2 affair.
  • The Warriors took away the momentum, however, as Liam Walsh redirected in a shot at 16:25 to push the score to 4-2.
  • BU once again came out of the locker room with some energy, creating some chances in the early stages of the second, but could not capitalize.
  • The Terriers had just one power play all game and it came at 4:22 of the third but they were only able to muster one shot during the two minutes and could get no closer.
  • An empty-netter from deep in the Merrimack zone by Liam Dennison with 1:28 left created the 5-2 final.
GAME NOTES
  • The six goals that were scored in the opening period came within a span of 6:16.
  • Commesso stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced in goal for the Terriers.
  • Jere Huhtamaa picked up the win in goal for the Warriors with a 26-save effort.
  • Merrimack went 0-for-2 on the power play and held a 38-28 shot advantage.
