Softball Pitches Pair of Shutouts in DH Sweep at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After cruising to a 16-0 run-rule victory, the Boston University softball team rode the arm of sophomore Allison Boaz to a 1-0 win to claim the doubleheader sweep at Lehigh on Saturday afternoon.

With the pair of victories, the Terriers (13-1, 2-0 PL) extend their win streak to 12 games, while the Mountain Hawks drop to 2-8 (0-2 PL) after suffering a doubleheader shutout for the first time since BU accomplished the feat at Leadership Park in 2019.

Junior Emily Gant led the offense batting a combined 4-of-6 with three runs scored and an RBI, while sophomore Caitlin Coker went 3-of-6 with four runs scored and two RBIs. Gant also collected two strikeouts in the circle in the final inning of game one to help senior Ali DuBois (9-0) earn her eighth career combined shutout (27 solo). Boaz followed their performance by tallying five strikeouts against two hits allowed to extend her streak of scoreless innings to 22 total.

GAME 1: BU 16, Lehigh 0 (5 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Coker doubled to start the game and took third on a wild pitch before freshman Lauren Keleher hit an RBI single up the middle for the 1-0 advantage.
  • Following singles by junior Aliyah Huerta-Leipner and Gant, BU took advantage of a wild pitch and error to bump its edge to 3-0.
  • After earning a walk, junior Nicole Amodio stole second and motored on back-to-back ground outs to cross the plate, scoring during a rundown created by sophomore Audrey Sellers to make it a 5-0 game after the first inning.
  • The Terriers loaded the bases to start the second with a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch to set up Huerta-Leipner's two-RBI single to center.
  • Gant plated Keleher on a single, and senior Jen Horita made it 9-0 on an RBI groundout to bring in Huerta-Leipner.
  • With the bases juiced once more, senior Patricia Dun walked for an RBI before Coker lined a two-RBI single to the right side.
  • Keleher made it 14-0 with a single to right, and freshman Lauren Nett added her own two-RBI single the following inning.
  • DuBois surrendered just two hits and struck out two before Gant added two more strikeouts in the fifth for the combined shutout.
GAME 2: BU 1, Lehigh 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second time, Coker led off the game with a hit, as she laid down a successful bunt before moving to second on Keleher's sac bunt.
  • After Coker moved to third on a wild pitch, Huerta-Leipner sent a sacrifice fly to center for what proved to be the game's lone run.
  • BU committed an error in each of the first four innings, but Sellers caught a runner trying to steal second two times.
  • In the fourth with two on following a one-out walk against Boaz, Lehigh grounded into a 1-5-3 double play.
  • Trying to extend the lead, Gant, senior Marina Sylvestri and Horita led off with singles in the top of the seventh but Gant was thrown out trying to reach home.
  • Lehigh's Gabriella Nori (1-2) followed with a strikeout to foul out to keep the score at 1-0.
  • The Mountain Hawks led off with a single before Boaz sealed the shutout on a strikeout and pair of ground outs.
GAME NOTES
  • The 16 runs scored were BU's most since the Terriers claimed an 18-2 home win over Hartford in 2010.
  • They were also the most runs scored away from home since a 19-6 win over Maine in a 2003 America East tournament game hosted by Stony Brook and the most in a true road game since an 18-4 win at Holy Cross in 1993.
  • DuBois moved into a tie for second place all-time in the Patriot League at 69 career victories.
  • BU has now won nine of its last 10 meetings with the Mountain Hawks after winning just three of the previous 10 contests.
  • The Terriers have recorded seven shutouts during the current 12-game win streak and are now 2-1 this season in games decided by one run.
NEXT UP: Colgate
  • With Sunday's doubleheader at Lehigh postponed due to expected inclement weather, the Terriers will next host Colgate for a four-game series on April 3-4.
  • BU is 18-1 all-time against the Raiders after winning all four games at home in 2019, including the opening game of the PL tournament with a 3-0 score.
