Holy Cross Outlasts Men's Soccer, 2-1

WORCESTER, Mass. – Competing in its final road game of the regular season, the Boston University men's soccer team suffered heartbreak late in regulation after allowing a goal with 18 seconds remaining for a 2-1 defeat at Holy Cross on Thursday night.

Breaking a three-way tie for second in the Patriot League's North Division, the Crusaders move to 2-1 (2-1 PL) with just one game remaining, as the Terriers drop to 1-2 (1-2 PL). BU had an opportunity to take the lead after freshman Andrew Rent netted the equalizer 12 seconds following Holy Cross' 37th-minute goal but was unable to convert on a penalty kick in the 74th minute. The Crusaders pounced on a late turnover before the horn sounded for the one-goal win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman Andrew Wike made five saves in the first half, starting with a diving stop at 6:55 after Holy Cross' Matt McGonigle one-timed a shot following a long service into the box.
  • Senior Zion Balogun attempted BU's first shot at 10:58, but the Terriers wouldn't have another until the 37th minute.
  • Wike made four saves over a six-minute stretch, including an impressive diving stop at 34:41 when Max Krause broke through the backline and rifled a shot at the bottom left corner.
  • The Terriers knocked the ensuing corner kick out of bounds and Holy Cross converted on the next attempt, as Krause's high cross used the wind to redirect off Wike's outstretched arms into the back of the net at 36:08.
  • BU quickly struck back needing just 12 seconds to get on the scoreboard, as the Terriers sent a long pass into the box for sophomore Ronaldo Marshall to head over to the slashing Rent for the quick strike at the far post.
  • After drawing the Terriers offsides, the Crusaders pushed the ball up the field and managed to slide the ball past a charging Wike on the left side, but the backline was in position to clear the shot for the team save.
  • BU had greater possession of the ball in the second half compared to the first with both freshman Eitan Rosen and sophomore Marc Roura going wide left in the 61st minute.
  • The Terriers drew a penalty kick in the 74th minute, but Holy Cross' Nick Conklu made a diving save on Marshall's low shot aimed at the right post.
  • Rent tried to pounce on the rebound, but Conklu was able to make a second save to keep the game tied, 1-1.
  • Two minutes after Wike made his sixth save at 87:39, the Crusaders blocked an attempted clear to create a 3-on-2 advantage, and Bergin Kranz scored with 18 seconds left on a hard shot past the defenseless Wike.
GAME NOTES
  • Rent moved into a tie for first on the team with Marshall at six points off two goals and two assists apiece.
  • HC finished with a 16-8 advantage in shots and 7-4 lead in corners.
  • The Crusaders moved to 4-13-1 all-time in the series with their second consecutive one-goal win and handed BU its first loss in Worcester since the Terriers joined the PL in the summer of 2013.
NEXT UP: ARMY WEST POINT
  • The Terriers will next host the Black Knights on Saturday, April 10, at 4 p.m. in the final home game of the regular season.
  • BU is 8-3-2 all-time after Army won in OT last season, 2-1, in West Point to snap a seven-game winless streak in the series.
