Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Boston College Edges Men's Soccer, 2-1

NEWTON, Mass. – Despite junior Quinn Matulis netting the game's first goal, the Boston University men's soccer team came up short at Boston College, 2-1, Monday evening on the ACC Network.

Matulis converted on a penalty kick in the 28th minute for the early 1-0 advantage, but after drawing a straight red card in the 31st, the energized Eagles rallied with two second-half goals off the foot of 2019 All-ACC honoree Stefan Sigurdarson. BC then fended off a late Terrier charge to improve to 1-1, while BU fell to 0-2.

"It's a tough one to swallow, not from losing a game to a quality side but just with how things transpired," said head coach Kevin Nylen. "You have a really good first half and have your foot on the game. You get a goal and they get a red card. Quite frankly, the red card changed the game in their advantage and our disadvantage. For our guys, it's a big learning night with learning control in terms of the emotional side as well as just being in these situations, but as I said to the group, we will for sure bounce back. Again, a good effort by BC to take it to us after the red card."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Following the first 19 minutes in which BC attempted the game's only shot at 3:21, the Terriers began to assert control with back-to-back corners that led to junior Griffin Roach firing a shot over the crossbar.
  • BC's Christian Garner made his first save at 22:46 on a quick attempt from senior Evan Morrison at the near post during a scramble in the box, and junior Ronaldo Marshall went wide right shortly thereafter.
  • The Eagles momentarily regained possession and forced a kick save from junior Francesco Montali at 25:06.
  • BU cleared the ensuing corner kick and managed to draw a penalty in the box to set up Matulis' low shot attempt at the left corner for the 1-0 advantage at 27:02.
  • Three minutes later during a counter attack after playing a long pass up the right side, BU drew another penalty that led to a straight red card to go up a man.
  • Garner stopped a shot from sophomore Eitan Rosen at 31:56 to keep the Terriers' lead at 1-0.
  • The Eagles ended the half earning three corners while also attempting the final six shots, including one that forced a save from Montali at 44:49.
  • Just a minute into the second half, BC slid a through ball into the box to Aidan Farwell, who sent a short cross off Sigurdarson's chest into the left corner.
  • Sigurdarson broke the 1-1 deadlock by receiving a long pass in the final offensive third and firing a high shot at the near post at 61:27.
  • Trying to net the equalizer, Rosen flicked a cross just over the bar at 80:13.
  • The Terriers earned a corner two minutes later and sent multiple dangerous crosses into the box in the frantic final minutes but came up empty for the one-goal loss.

GAME NOTES

  • Named to TopDrawerSoccer's Preseason Top-100 Players to Watch, Matulis scored BU's first goal of the season in two contests after he totaled eight goals over the last two years at Air Force.
  • The Eagles finished with a 17-8 advantage in shots and 5-5 tie in corner kicks.
  • Montali recorded four saves, while Garner recorded two.
  • BC extended its unbeaten streak in the series to eight games with five of the games being decided by one goal and the 2018 matchup in Newton ending in a 3-3 draw.
