Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Goal Propels Terriers Past Mountain Hawks, 1-0

BOSTON - Redshirt senior Amy Thompson scored for the second consecutive game, and the defense recorded its second-straight shutout to guide the Boston University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Lehigh on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

Both sides played to a scoreless draw for the first 80 minutes before Thompson found the back of the net in the 81st minute. From there, BU (6-6, 3-1 PL) held the Mountain Hawks (4-5-1, 2-2-0 PL) without a shot to capture the team's third win in the last four matches and celebrate Alumni Day in style.

Thompson and freshman Giulianna Gianino finished with three shots apiece, with all three of the former's attempts placed on target. Goalkeepers Gretchen Bennett and Celia Braun combined to make two saves between the posts.

Sophia Lis paced Lehigh with three shots, one of which was on goal. Maggie Ousouljoglou recorded four saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Braun collected her first save in the sixth minute, punching away a 25-yard strike from Mattie Murphy. BU then cleared the ensuing Mountain Hawk corner kick.
  • Thompson ripped the first Terrier shot in the 22nd minute from the top-right corner of the penalty box, but Ousouljoglou slid to send it away.
  • Moments later, Gianino send an attempt wide right of the goal from about 15 yards away.
  • In the 41st minute, senior Julianna Stureman found herself along at the top of the box for a chance, but her shot floated right to the Lehigh keeper, keeping the score level at halftime.
  • The Terriers had two opportunities for a score around the 56th minute. Gianino's shot near the left post was blocked, then Thompson tried a close-range chance that Ousouljoglou snatched up.
  • Bennett, who started in goal in the second half, squared up Lis' attempt from 15 yards out for her lone save of the match.
  • On BU's goal, sophomore Morgan Fagan was dispossessed in the top-right corner of the box, but Thompson collected the loose ball, evaded two markers near the right post, and placed a shot that Ousouljoglou tipped, but could not keep from tucking into the top-left corner of the net.
