Women’s Soccer Shuts Out No. 25 Harvard On The Road, 1-0

NORTH ALLSTON, Mass. – Behind nine saves from sophomore Celia Braun and a goal from junior Abigail McNulty, the Boston University women's soccer program defeated No. 25 Harvard 1-0 on Tuesday evening at Jordan Field.

BU (7-6-0) took the lead in the 16th minute, and withstood 27 shots from the Crimson (7-1-2) to hand its crosstown rivals its first loss of the season. The win serves as the Terriers' first win over a Top-25 opponent since 2014.

McNulty had both of the Terriers' shots. In addition to Braun, redshirt senior Jenna Oldham, junior Lily Matthews, and sophomore Eileen Solomon played the entire 90 minutes.

Hannah Bebar finished with a game-high five shots, three of which were on target. Ainsley Ahmadian provided four shots off the bench.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Braun collected her first two saves in the opening 10:27, the first on a direct kick from Bebar 20 yards out.
  • On McNulty's goal, sophomore Morgan Fagan crossed the ball from near midfield to McNulty by the left sideline. The junior deked a defender near the left post from eight yards out and finished her shot in the lower-right corner.
  • Braun came up with another big stop in the 28th minute, flicking Audrey Francois' chance over the crossbar with her right hand. She then snagged the ensuing Harvard corner kick.
  • BU maintained the lead at halftime, but the Crimson responded with 18 shots in the second half. Ahmadian almost found the equalizer in the 55th minute, but Braun worked to her right for a sprawling save by the right post.
  • As the 60th minute passed, each team generated a corner kick. However, Harvard was able to rattle off a shot; August Hunter sent it wide left.
  • Braun came up with three saves within 55 seconds, starting at the 67th minute. After denying Taylor Fasnacht and and Hunter again, she worked to the lower-left side of the net to collect a Bebar opportunity.
  • Harvard's closest chance outside of two Braun saves in the 81st and 88th minutes was an Ahmadian shot that hit the bottom of the right post with 5:12 remaining in the game.

GAME NOTES
  • In total, Harvard had a 9-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • BU generated four corner kicks to the Crimson's five, marking the first time in 13 games the Terriers did not accrue more corners than their opponent.
  • McNulty scored for the first time since Aug. 28 against Michigan. She moves into a tie with redshirt senior Amy Thompson for the team lead with nine points in 2022.
  • Braun has not allowed a goal in the 308:24 minutes she has played. Spanning across five matches, she has made 21 saves during that streak.
  • The Terriers have shut out three straight opponents for the first time since Oct. 1-13, 2021. As a team, BU has not allowed a goal in its last 213:38, stretching across four matches.
  • Tuesday marks the Terriers' first victory over a team ranked in the Top 25 since a 2-1 triumph over No. 19 Boston College on Aug. 24, 2014.
  • Since the start of the 2005 season, BU has seven wins against Top 25 programs. Five of those victories have been shutouts.
  • The Terriers improve to 10-9-6 all-time against Harvard.
