WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore
Morgan Fagan found the back of the net in the 59th minute, and the Boston University women's soccer team posted another shutout in a 1-0 victory over American on Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field.
BU (8-6, 4-1 PL) has won four-straight games, all by 1-0 decisions. The Eagles' (1-4-6, 0-3-2 PL) winless streak extends to eight games.
Both sides played to a scoreless draw in the first half, totaling just four combined shots in the opening 45 minutes. However, juniors
Lily Matthews and
Abigail McNulty ignited a counterattack that ended with Fagan's score past American keeper Julia Kato.
Fagan and redshirt senior
Amy Thompson each had two shots to lead the Terriers. Goalkeepers
Celia Braun (one save) and
Gretchen Bennett combined to allow just one American shot on target.
Kato posted two saves between the posts, while four different Eagles registered one shot.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU generated its first corner kick in the 13th minute, but the insert just far of senior Julianna Stureman, who was alone near the right post.
- Thompson registered BU's first shot in the 16th minute, turning on the ball inside the penalty box. Her attempt floated wide left.
- In the 25th minute, Brooke Steel bounced a shot towards Braun, who collected it for her lone save of the game.
- Braun made another standout play 10 minutes later, when the Eagles intercepted a Terrier pass in BU's end. Before Steel could make a play on it, Braun burst out of the net to dive on the ball.
- With minutes to go in the first half, BU placed a free kick from midfield into the box, where freshman Margy Porta found a header that Kato corralled.
- Classmate Giulianna Gianino opened the second frame with a deflected shot in the 51st minute that Kato also punched away. The Terriers could not capitalize on the ensuing corner kick.
- BU's goal started on the counter, as Matthews poked the ball to McNulty, who raced into the left corner and along the end line. Her cross found Fagan, who raced down the middle and found the back of the net.
- Fagan and Thompson each had chances to boost the lead to two around the 70th minute, but each shot sailed wide of the left post.
- The Eagles threatened in the 85th minute when Asia Horne headed a corner kick just over the crossbar. American did not record a shot the rest of the way.
