Terriers Snag Road Win At Loyola Maryland, 3-1

BOSTON - Scoring the first three goals of the match, the Boston University women's soccer program defeated Loyola Maryland 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Ridley Athletic Complex.

Thanks to the win in addition to Bucknell and Army's scoreless draw, BU (10-7, 6-2 PL) regains control of first place in the Patriot League table. The Greyhounds (6-6-4, 3-3-2 PL) remain in fifth place, pending the outcomes of other contests throughout the league on Saturday (Oct. 22).

Senior Marli Rajacich got the scoring started in the 39th minute to stake BU to a 1-0 halftime lead. Sophomore Morgan Fagan and redshirt senior Jenna Oldham tacked on to the edge in the second half before Loyola added one back in the 80th minute.

Oldham and freshman Giulianna Gianino led the team with two shots apiece. Sophomore Celia Braun produced a scoreless first frame in goal, collecting two saves.

Ada Clare Tempert notched the Greyhounds' lone tally, while Sarah Mirr added two shots. Paige Sim racked up three saves in goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Greyhounds generated two corners in the opening minute, but Braun punched away one for the first touch on the insert.
  • Gianino took BU's first shot of the match in the sixth minute, poking a shot from the left side of the penalty box towards Sim, who turned it aside.
  • Braun made her first save in the 13th minute, squaring up DeSmit's direct kick from the left sideline.
  • The Terriers earned a free kick in the 22nd minute, and Oldham nearly bent the shot into the upper-right corner, only for it to sail wide right.
  • In the 35th minute, Sarah Mirr navigated free around the Terrier back line for a 20-yard blast, but Braun made a diving save to her right to keep the game scoreless.
  • On Rajacich's goal, Sim could not corral a loose, bouncing ball in the box. The ball found its way to Rajacich in the middle, and she scored on an open net.
  • Just 20 seconds into the second half, Fagan stole the ball from a Greyhound deep in their zone, finding McNulty in the middle. The junior couldn't get a clean touch on it as Sim and a Loyola defender clamped down steps away from the goal line.
  • Fagan deposited her sixth goal of the season when she toed the top of the box and evaded a defender, burying a left-footed strike into the lower-right corner past a diving Sim.
  • Oldham added her insurance tally after Gianino was fouled just outside the top of the box. Oldham tucked a rolling shot into the left post when Sim hovered to the right post.
  • Tempert scored Loyola's goal from 20 yards out, floating it above an extended Gretchen Bennett.
