No. 9 BU Edged at No. 18 UMass Lowell, 2-1
October 28, 2022 | Men's Ice Hockey
LOWELL, Mass. - Junior Luke Tuch notched his third goal of the year, but the No. 9 Boston University men's ice hockey team came up just short at No. 18 UMass Lowell, 2-1, on Friday night at Tsongas Center.
BU (3-3-0, 1-2-0 HE) outshot UMass Lowell (5-2-0, 2-0-0 HE), 33-21, but the River Hawks scored twice in the second period and defended a furious Terrier rally at the end of the game to secure the win.
Seniors Domenick Fensore and Ethan Phillips each assisted on Tuch's power-play goal. Junior Vinny Duplessis made 19 saves, including several grade-A stops, to keep the Terriers in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team broke through in the opening 20 minutes, with the Terriers outshooting the River Hawks, 9-4.
- Duplessis made an outstanding right-pad save on a breakaway chance early in the second stanza, stretching across the crease to deny the opportunity.
- The River Hawks scored 16 seconds into a five-minute major, but the Terriers killed the remainder of it until a Lowell penalty made it 4-on-4.
- BU evened the score on the ensuing power play. Phillips and junior Luke Tuch were positioned in front of Henry Welsch, with Phillips and then Tuch redirecting a Fensore shot into the back of the net.
- UMass Lowell made it 2-1 with 4:04 to play in the period and took that lead into the final frame.
- The Terriers earned a power-play opportunity in the final minutes and had several good chances to tie the game; however, they were unable to find an equalizer.
- BU killed a penalty to keep it a one-goal game before pulling Duplessis in favor of an extra attacker with 1:58 remaining in regulation.
- The Terriers relentlessly pressured the Lowell net in search of the tying goal, but the River Hawks were able to hang on for the victory.
GAME NOTES
- Fensore collected his 50th career assist on Friday.
- BU has notched a power-play goal in all six games this season.
- This was Duplessis' first regulation loss since Nov. 6, 2021, at Northern Michigan, and his first regulation loss within league play since Feb. 26, 2021, against Merrimack.
- Not only did the Terriers generate 12 more shots on goal than the River Hawks, but they also had 60 shot attempts to just 34 for Lowell.
UP NEXT
- The Terriers and the River Hawks will conclude this weekend's series on Saturday night at Agganis Arena.
- Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
