BOSTON – Boosted by a pair of assists from senior
Quinn Matulis and four saves by senior
Francesco Montali, the Boston University men's soccer team rolled to a 2-0 win over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
With their fifth shutout of the season, the Terriers improve to 3-3-6 and 1-1-3 in conference play, while the Bison fall to 2-10-0 (1-4-0 PL). The contest was part of the annual Soc'toberFest and Alumni Weekend with former head coach Neil Roberts (1985-2019) being presented with a No. 35 jersey at halftime.
Senior
Colin Innes struck the first blow in the 19th minute with a nice spin move into the Bucknell box and then a one-time 15-yard blast at the far post following a quick pass back from Matulis. Four minutes later, the Terriers doubled the lead when senior
Griffin Roach headed inside the left post an angled free kick cross from Matulis.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU dominated possession for much of the first half, quickly earning a corner kick with freshman Ryan Lau sending senior Gianluca Arlotti's cross wide at 3:48.
- Arlotti's header was wide as well two minutes later, and sophomore Brian Hernandez forced a save by Freddie Lapworth at 16:04.
- Innes netted his second game winner of the year by utilizing a spin move to push the backline back into the box and then making a quick pass to Matulis before blasting a shot on the first touch at 18:58.
- The Terriers doubled the lead four minutes later when Roach headed in Matulis' free kick from outside the box on the left side inside the near post.
- Bucknell started applying pressure in the 27th minute, but Montali earned a save and the backline helped defend against the Bison's two corner kicks.
- Sophomore Daniel Kim forced a save from Lapworth on a header two minutes into the second half, and Montali earned his second shortly thereafter on a header.
- The Terriers had several dangerous runs and crosses into the Bucknell box but came up empty in the second half for their first multi-goal win of the season.
GAME NOTES
- Matulis became the first Terrier to earn two assists in a game this season and the last one to accomplish the feat since junior Andrew Rent tallied two against Colgate during the 2020 season. Both men are tied for the team lead at three helpers.
- Innes owns the team lead at eight points, three ahead of Matulis.
- Roach became the seventh Terrier to score a goal this season and the 10th to earn at least one point.
- BU posted a 14-9 advantage in shots, as the teams recorded a 5-5 tie in corner kicks.
- With their second consecutive shutout against the Bison, the Terriers improved to 2-3-6 all-time in the second-ever meeting between the two programs to have a team emerge as the victor in regulation.

- BU will head south to Baltimore to face Loyola Maryland next Saturday (Oct. 15) at 1 p.m.
- The Greyhounds have won each of the last four games.
