Lightweight Rowing Opens Season at Head Of The Housatonic

October 8, 2022

DERBY, Conn. – Celebrating its 10th anniversary as a varsity program earlier in the semester, the Boston University lightweight rowing program began its 11th season at the 2022 Head of the Housatonic on Saturday morning, recording two top-20 finishes in the Women's Collegiate 8+.

Competing against openweight crews from fellow Division I schools, BU's top boat captured 10th place out of 28 crews in a time of 16:38.4. The crew, coxed by junior Rayna Kuthiala and stroked by freshman Nora Hemsley, finished 10 seconds behind Yale's third boat, and ahead of both Boston College's and Northeastern's third and fourth boats.

With the crew's performance, BU has had a boat finish in the top 10 in the event in the last five iterations of the Head of the Housatonic, a span dating back to 2017.

The second Terrier crew, coxed by junior Mayela Gaol and stroked by sophomore Nina Palmer, took 18th place with a time of 17:16.0. BU finished just 1.1 seconds behind Fordham's first boat, but was ahead of Northeastern by just under 10 seconds.

BU turns its attention to the 56th Head of the Charles, taking place from Oct. 21-23 along the Charles River. BU's DeWolfe Boathouse once again serves as the official starting line.
