The Boston University field hockey team heads to the nation's capital for the 2022 Patriot League Championship as the top-seeded Terriers will face fourth-seeded Bucknell in the opening semifinal on Thursday (Nov. 3) at 11 a.m.
The Terriers and Bison will be playing for the second time in five days as BU posted a 2-1 road win on Sunday to claim the regular-season title. Tournament host American will face Lehigh in the other semifinal at 2 p.m.
The two winners will meet for the title on Saturday (Nov. 5) at 11 a.m.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- The top seed in the Patriot League Championship for the sixth time in the past eight years, BU is in search of its fifth title and first since 2018.
- Sophomore Payton Anderson was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, freshman Martu Coulo became the third PL Rookie of the Year in program history and Sally Starr was named PL Coach of the Year for the sixth time in the past eight seasons.
- Senior Rachel Borzymowski became the first player in program history to be named the PL Scholar-Athlete of the Year in field hockey.
- Senior Caroline Kelly is the two-time reigning PL Goalkeeper of the Week and her .791 save percentage ranks ninth in the nation and is the highest by a Terrier in 10 seasons.
- Junior Tess Csejka continues to lead the team in both goals (10) and points (21) while Anderson ranks second in both with 19 points and nine goals.
- Anderson was joined on the All-Patriot League First Team by junior Thalia Steenssens while Borzymowski, Kelly, Csejka, Coulo were all second-team picks.
- Steenssens and graduate student Casey Thompson share the squad lead in assists with nine apiece.
- Borzymowski, Thompson and senior Mikayla Crowley all earned spots on the Academic All-PL Team as Thompson became the first four-time honoree in league history.
SCOUTING BUCKNELL
- The Bison went 1-6 over the last seven games of the season with the win being a 3-2 home decision over Lock Haven.
- Bucknell's other wins this season have come against Central Michigan, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Colgate.
- Sophomore Lily Neilson, the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, ranks first in the league in both points (29) and goals (14)
- Four other Bison players have 10 or more points this season including senior Mackenzie Kile, who leads the PL in assists with 12.
- Neilson and senior Kayla Kisthardt were selected to the All-PL Second Team while Kile and freshman Kira Leclercq were second-team honorees.
- Senior Clara McCormick has started in goal in 14 of the Bison's 17 contests this season and currently has a .560 save percentage and 3.05 goals-against average.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Terriers are 11-4 all-time against Bucknell and ended a three-game skid against the Bison on Sunday.
- The past three meetings have resulted in a 2-1 score.
- The Terriers are 5-1 all-time against Bucknell in the Patriot League tournament though the lone loss was the most recent, a 2-1 overtime contest in the spring 2021 final at BU.
