Women's Ice Hockey Blanked by Maine, 3-0

BOSTON – The Boston University women's ice hockey team fell to Maine, 3-0, on Friday evening in the opener of a weekend series at Walter Brown Arena.

The visiting Black Bears broke a scoreless draw with a pair of second-period goals before adding a late empty-netter to improve to an even 10-10-0 on the year and 7-6-0 in Hockey East play.

The Terriers had a three-game Hockey East win streak snapped and fell to 6-11-0 with a 5-8-0 league mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU appeared to have the upper hand in the game's early stages but were unable to capitalize.
  • Both teams stayed out of the penalty box in the first period and the teams headed into the first intermission scoreless.
  • Maine opened the scoring on its first power-play chance of the evening as Lilli Welcke found the back of the net off assists from Mira Seregely and her twin sister, Luisa Welcke, at 3:34 of the middle period.
  • The Black Bears doubled their lead nine minutes later when Mira Seregely won a puck battle in front of her bench and then found Alyssas Wrubel, who converted from the right circle at the 12:19 mark of the second.
  • Towards the end of the second, BU handed Maine a 5-on-3 power play that lasted for 1:28 but the Terriers were able to get back to full strength and stay within striking distance.
  • The Terriers held a 10-7 shot advantage in the final period and had two power-play chances but Maine goaltender Brooklyn Oakes stopped everything she saw to complete a 19-save shutout.
  • Lilli Welcke capped a two-goal night with an empty-netter in the closing seconds.

GAME NOTES
  • Three-time Olympic gold medalist Marie-Philip Poulin '15 was on hand for a ceremonial puck drop and she will be the first player in program history to be inducted into the BU Athletic Hall of Fame at tomorrow's banquet.
  • Maine went 1-for-3 on the power play while BU came up empty on two tries with the player advantage.
  • Junior Tamara Giaquinto tied Maine's Ida Kuoppala for the game high in blocked shots with four.
