Terriers Edged by Maine, 3-2

BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team fell to Maine, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon as the Black Bears completed a weekend sweep at Walter Brown Arena.

Junior Madison Cardaci and senior Julia Nearis scored for the Terriers, who move to 6-12-0 on the year and 5-9-0 in Hockey East play.

Maine scored twice in the opening period before BU potted the lone goal of the second period. The Black Bears regained a two-goal advantage at 6:23 of the third before Nearis made it a one-goal game again with her team-leading seventh goal of the year.

The Black Bears hung on, however, and improved to 11-10-0 with an 8-6 conference mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maine used special teams to build its first-period lead with both a shorthanded goal and a power-play goal.
  • BU got the first power play of the game but the Black Bears scored just 13 seconds into their penalty, as Mira Seregely scored off assists from Alyssa Wruble and Nicole Pateman 9:58 into the game.
  • Maine doubled its lead on a power play with 2:09 left in the first on a goal from Luisa Welcke.
  • BU made it a 2-1 contest early in the second on a misplay by the Black Bears behind their net as Cardaci raced to a loose puck and curled around the left side before sneaking the puck past Maine goaltender Jorden Mattison.
  • Welcke reestablished a two-goal lead for Maine with her second marker of the contest at 6:23 of the third.
  • Nearis made it a 3-2 affair when she sent home a rebound off a shot by senior Haylee Blinkhorn at 9:08 of the third.
  • BU pulled sophomore goaltender Callie Shanahan with 1:20 left but was unable to come up with an equalizer.

GAME NOTES
  • Both teams recorded 31 shots on goal
  • Maine went 1-for-3 on the power play while BU was 0-for-2.
