BOSTON – While closing out the 2022 calendar year, the Boston University women's basketball program opens Patriot League action with a visit to Navy on Friday (Dec. 30). Opening tip is scheduled for 1 p.m.

BU closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 5-6 record, marking the third time reaching the five-win plateau against out-of-league opponents as a member of the Patriot League. The Terriers also seek to end 2022 with its 19th victory in the calendar year, having gone 18-13 to this point.

Navy aims for its first win on the season after a 0-11 performance vs. non-conference opponents. The Mids are 0-6 so far at home, having been outscored 221-165 in the first half.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU fell to local rival Harvard, 73-58, on Dec. 21 at home in its last game.
  • The Terriers held the Crimson to just 2-of-18 shooting from three, but Harvard still hit 54 percent of its shots from the field.
  • Senior Maren Durant led the team with a season-high 16 points, adding six field goals, seven rebounds, and five assists.
  • Sophomore Alex Giannaros came off the bench to drop 13 points, making all three of her three-point shots.
  • Freshman Sam Crispe led BU with a career-best eight boards.
  • Dating back to the season opener on Nov. 7, Giannaros has made eight consecutive three-pointers. She is 9-for-13 from distance in her first four games.
  • After averaging 4.5 points per game in her first eight appearances, Durant is scoring 11.3 points per contest in her last three. She has hit 14 of her 21 shots (66.7 percent) during that stretch.
  • Durant enters Friday needing three more blocks to reach fourth place all-time in the Terrier record book, and 17 rebounds to enter the top 10.
  • Senior Maggie Pina is currently tied for seventh with 159 career three-pointers at BU. She is three away from former teammate Katie Nelson '21 for sixth place.
  • Pina is seventh in the country with a .511 three-point percentage this season. As a team, the Terriers rank fourth, behind Illinois, Colorado State, and UConn.
  • During non-conference play, BU led the Patriot League in blocks per game (4.1), rebounds per game (39), and three-point percentage (.414).
  • Individually, Durant ranks second with 1.1 blocks per game and fifth with eight boards per contest. Crispe's eight blocks are tied for fourth-most by a Patriot League student-athlete.
  • Senior Sydney Johnson's four assists per game and 1.4 assist/turnover ratio are second and third, respectively.
  • BU has won five of its last six Patriot League lidlifters. A win would mark three in a row for the first time since the 2016-17 to 2018-19 seasons.

SCOUTING NAVY
  • The Mids wrapped up non-conference play with an 0-11 record, most recently falling to Georgetown, 74-47, on Dec. 11.
  • Seven of those 11 defeats were by more than 10 points, with a toal average margin of 17.5 points.
  • Opponents have scored 73.9 points per game against Navy with a .439 field goal percentage, and force nearly 20 Mids turnovers per game.
  • Sydne Watts leads Navy and ranks fourth in the Patriot League with 16 points per game. She has six appearances with 17 or more points.
  • Maren Louridas is eighth in the league with 13.6 points per contest. Her three Patriot League Rookie of the Week selections are most by a freshman in the league this season.
  • Head Coach Tim Taylor is in his third season at the helm.
  • Navy was projected to finish 10th in the Patriot League Preseason Poll.
  • In 2021-22, the Mids finished with a 10-21 record, finishing eighth in the PL with a 5-13 mark. Navy advanced to the semifinals following an upset over top-seeded Holy Cross in the quarterfinal round.

SERIES HISTORY
  • Friday marks the 18th all-time meeting between BU and Navy in a series that began in 2011.
  • The Mids sport a 10-7 edge in the rivalry, boosted by a stretch of nine victories across a 10-game stretch from 2014-18.
  • The Terriers have won three straight against Navy, however, and five of the last six duels. Each win during that span has been by double figures.
  • BU is 2-6 all-time against the Mids in Annapolis, Md.
  • This marks the second consecutive year BU and Navy face off in each team's league opener.
  • The Terriers swept last year's season series. Giannaros' 18 points and five assists led four Terriers in double figures in an 82-58 triumph on Jan. 2. In the last meeting, Johnson and Shean combined for 40 points on nine three-pointers as BU snagged a 74-63 win on Jan. 15. Weimar also added a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double.
