BOSTON – Fresh off completing its regular season sweep of Army this past Wednesday, the Boston University women's basketball team looks to do the same against American in a road tilt this Saturday (Feb. 12). Opening tip is set for 2 p.m.
The Terriers have the opportunity to sweep their fourth Patriot League opponent this year, having done so against Navy, Loyola Maryland, and Army. BU maintains a first-place tie with Holy Cross in the league standings with a 10-2 conference record.
American currently sits in fourth place, one game behind third-place Lehigh and three games behind the Terriers and the Crusaders. The Eagles have won five of their last seven games entering Saturday's contest.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU rebounded from its Lehigh loss with a 69-56 triumph over Army West Point in the Hudson Valley back on Wednesday.
- Army made eight of its first nine shots and held the Terriers to 20 percent shooting in the second quarter, but BU rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half, outscoring the Black Knights 43-22.
- Junior Liz Shean led the team with 18 points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, while sophomore Caitlin Weimar added a 16-point, 14-rebound double-double.
- Junior Sydney Johnson and freshman Alex Giannaros each had 16 and 12 points, respectively.
- Capturing its 10th Patriot League victory in that game, BU has reached 10 PL wins for the fifth time in program history, and in four straight seasons. The record for PL wins in a season is 12, set in 2019-20.
- The Terriers have won three consecutive road games, and are 5-1 away from Boston against PL opponents.
- BU has registered 38.1 rebounds per game this year. In 13 games this year, the Terriers have snagged 10-plus offensive boards.
- Shean paces the Terrier guards in each shooting split. She has shot 49.4 percent from the field, 50 percent from three, and 87 percent from the foul line.
- Johnson has scored in double figures in 12 straight games, averaging 18 points per game in that stretch.
- She and Giannaros rank second and third in the PL in field goal percentage during league play, shooting .438 and .431, respectively.
- Weimar and junior Maren Durant also rank top three in blocks per game against PL foes. Durant, who has 111 career rejections, is three behind her former head coach, Marisa Moseley, for sixth place all-time at BU.
SCOUTING AMERICAN
- American sits fourth in the Patriot League standings with a 7-4 conference record, and are 14-7 overall.
- Most recently, the Eagles thwarted Bucknell, 56-48 last Wednesday. With the win, Head Coach Megan Gebbia became the program's all-time wins leader.
- American leads the Patriot League and ranks 17th in the nation in three-point percentage defense, allowing foes to shoot just 25.8 percent from deep.
- The Eagles are also first in the PL in turnovers forced, free throws, and steals per game.
- Preseason PL Player of the Year Jade Edwards paces the team with 12.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. She is one of three Eagles to start all 21 games: Taylor Brown (11.5 points per game, 39 steals) and Emily Fisher (90 assists) are the others.
SERIES HISTORY
- Wednesday marks the 23rd all-time meeting between BU and American.
- Though the Eagles are 14-8 in the series, the Terriers have won three straight and four of the last five matchups.
- In the first meeting this season, BU earned a 69-46 victory at Case Gym on Jan. 8.
- In that contest, Weimar unloaded for 16 points, a career-best 18 rebounds, and four blocks. Johnson posted 13 points and six assists, while Giannaros added 11 points.
- Brown led American, who shot just 3-for-20 from beyond the arc, with 15 points.
- The Terriers have never beaten the Eagles in Washington, D.C., going 0-10 since the teams first met in 1981.
