Terriers Fall to Friars in Overtime, 2-1, in Regular-Season Finale

BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team closed out its regular season with a 2-1 overtime loss to Providence on Saturday evening at Walter Brown Arena.

The Terriers finish the regular season with a record of 12-14-6 overall and 11-9-5 in Hockey East play. They will travel to UConn as the No. 6 seed in the Hockey East quarterfinal round.

Providence opened the scoring with a first-period power-play goal before the Terriers drew even on a tally by graduate student Ellie Larson in the middle period. The Friars got the winner from Isabelle Hardy with 1:24 left in overtime.

BU honored its eight-member senior class prior to their final game on home ice.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • On their second of two power play opportunities in the opening period, the Friars took a 1-0 lead when Lily Hendrikson stopped a clearing attempt and quickly fired a shot from the high slot that beat BU netminder Kate Stuart at the 11:41 mark.
  • Larson made it a 1-1 game at 8:49 of the second period when she put a backhand through Providence netminder Sandra Abstreiter's pads just seconds after a BU penalty expired.
  • Senior Kaleigh Donnelly broke up a PC pass right as Nadia Mattivi's penalty expired and chipped the puck up to Larson, who jumped onto the ice to bring BU back to even strength and raced to the far boards to receive the pass from Donnelly and skate in for the equalizer.
  • Neither team was able to take the lead during the latter half of regulation although the Terriers outshot the Friars, 14-6, in the third period.
  • The Friars found the back of the net as the third-period buzzer sounded but after video replay it was ruled that the puck hadn't reached the goal line before the clock hit zero.
  • In overtime, PC was awarded a penalty shot after a BU defender covered up the puck in the crease.
  • Senior Nicole McGuigan made the stop on Caroline Peterson's attempt and the extra session continued.
  • The Friars got the winner from Hardy as she got the puck in the right circle after a shot rung off the post and shot it off McGuigan and in.
GAME NOTES
  • BU held a 31-23 shot advantage.
  • The Terriers went 0-for-3 on their power play while the Friars scored on one of their three chances.
  • Stuart and McGuigan split time in goal on Senior Night and put up almost identical performances as Stuart made 10 saves on 11 shots while McGuigan recorded 11 saves on 12 shots.
UP NEXT
  • The postseason will start for the Terriers on Saturday, Feb. 26, when they visit third-seeded UConn in the Hockey East quarterfinals.
  • Game time at Freitas Ice Forum is set for 3 p.m.
