CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior
Wilmer Skoog scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season, but the Boston University men's ice hockey team suffered a 3-1 setback at Boston College on Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum.
Skoog opened the scoring for BU (18-11-3, 12-7-3 HE), but BC (12-17-5, 7-12-3 HE) tallied once in the second period and then broke the 1-1 deadlock with 5:20 remaining in regulation. The loss snapped the Terriers' eight-game win streak and ensured an even 1-1-1 split of the regular-season series with the Eagles, despite the fact that BU outshot BC, 43-24, on Sunday.
Juniors
Matt Brown and
Domenick Fensore assisted on Skoog's strike. Fensore extended his point streak to seven games with his helper. Sophomore
Drew Commesso made 21 saves in his first start for the Terriers since returning from the Olympics in Beijing.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Skoog got BU on the board first with a power-play goal at 5:53 of the first period. Fensore did well to keep the puck in the zone, and in the ensuing chaos at the blue line, found a wide open Brown in front of the net. An Eagle defender bothered Brown enough to prevent a shot, but Brown recovered to throw the puck behind him to Skoog at the right circle. Skoog unleashed a rocket that Eric Dop (42Â saves) had no chance to stop.
- BC evened the score at the 15:14 mark of the second stanza off the stick of Jack McBain.
- Graduate student Max Kaufman nearly got BU the lead back just seconds into the third period, but his shorthanded breakaway bid was turned aside.
- BC had a look to take the lead with 12:45 left in the third but the puck rang the post.
- Kaufman again had a good opportunity with 6:00 left when he created a 2-on-1 with junior Sam Stevens, but Dop smothered Kaufman's shot.
- The Eagles broke through with 5:20 remaining in regulation.
- With the net empty, freshman Ty Gallagher drew a tripping call on the Eagles with 15.2 seconds on the clock, but the Eagles won the ensuing faceoff and scored an empty-netter to seal the win.
