BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior
Lauren Kaye scored two goals, and classmate
Jennifer Barry tied the single-season program record in draw controls, but the Boston University women's lacrosse team dropped their Patriot League road opener to No. 7 Loyola Maryland 23-5 on Saturday afternoon at the Ridley Athletic Complex.
BU (0-9, 0-3 PL) and Loyola (9-0, 2-0 PL) matched goals in the first five minutes of the game, but the Greyhounds scored seven straight before the Terriers' next goal at the 9:41 mark of the second quarter. Loyola would hold BU scoreless until one second to go in the third to put the game away.
Barry finished with six draw controls to give her 91 in nine games on the season, matching Jill Horka's output across 18 games in 2016.
Sophomores
Kaelin Isaacson and
Tobey Tick as well as freshman
Matty Spaeth also found the back of the net.
Livy Rosenzweig recorded a game-high seven points off five goals and two assists, and controlled six draws. Georgia Latch tallied three goals and three assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kaye broke the ice 1:11 into the contest, dodging from 12 meters out and beating Greyhound goalie Kaitlyn Larsson.
- With just under five minutes gone by in the game, sophomore Cassie Reinertson found Isaacson on the doorstep, and the latter shoveled the ball into the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.
- BU's next goal came on Kaye's free position tally to pull the Terriers within 9-3.
- The Greyhounds scored the game's next 12 goals from that point.
- Spaeth also potted a shot off the 8-meter with 0.8 seconds on the clock in the third quarter.
- Approaching the midpoint of the fourth quarter, freshman Abby Cotraro's pass from the left hanging hash redirected off Tick and behind Loyola netminder Lauren Spence.
GAME NOTES
- Loyola finished with 33 shots to BU's 20.
- Both teams were 15-for-16 on clear attempts in the game. Since the start of March, the Terriers are 75-for-82 (.914) on clears, a span of five games.
- Senior Kennady Smith paced BU with four saves between the pipes.
- Barry and Horka are the only Terriers in program history to control 90-plus draws in a single season. At 174 career draw controls, Barry is eight away from Head Coach Lauren Morton for fourth on the all-time list.
- Spaeth's goal continued the trend of a rookie scoring in every game this season for BU. Spaeth has a team-high 16 goals on the season.
- In 20 career games, Kaye has notched a point in 17 of them, a goal in 15, and multiple goals in eight.
- Cotraro's assist was the first of her career.
- The all-time series now favors Loyola 13-2.
