The Boston University track & field teams turned in standout performances across the country on their opening weekend of the outdoor season with various program top-10 marks at the Texas Relays, the Raleigh Relays, the Bobcat Invitational and the UMass Lowell Invitational.
Texas Relays
Freshman
Toby Makoyawo stole the show on Saturday at the Texas Relays in Austin, winning the 100-meter dash in a wind-aided time of 9.90 seconds after smashing the school record in the prelims at 10.12 seconds.
Makoyawo teamed up with classmates
Matt Spicer and
Leon Christian and sophomore
Uchenna Nwosu to top the program mark in the 4x100 relay with a time of 39.89, .07 seconds better than the previous mark of 39.96 set in 2016.
Christian's time of 10.58 in the 100-meter dash placed him 10th on BU's all-time list and Nwosu set a personal record in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.64.
Raleigh Relays
In the 1,500-meter run, senior Andrea Claeson ran 4:18.21, the second-fastest time in program history, to finish third in her heat. On the men's side, seniors
Marcel Aubry (3:50.05) and
Aksel Laudon (3:53.73) ran lifetime bests.
Four personal bests were earned in the women's 10,000-meter run. Sophomore Daisy Liljegren ran a 34:18.80 to finish third in her heat and post the fifth-best mark in BU history. Graduate student Corinne Batsu ran a 34:46.48, good for seventh all-time and over a minute better than her previous best. Graduate student Veronica Kriss finished in 35:45.94 and senior Angela Castronuovo posted a time of 36:40.58.
Junior Noelani Phillips ran a 56.36 in the 400-meter dash, tying her for 10th in the program record book, and also ran a 12.25 in the 100-meter dash.
Bobcat Invitational
Two Terriers won events at the Bobcat Invitational as freshman Asia Hamilton took first in the long jump (6.06m) and junior
Adam Crawford topped all competitors in the javelin throw (57.60m). Hamilton's jump tied her for fifth in program history while Crawford's throw placed him seventh on BU's all-time list.
Sophomore Emma Kowalski had the best and most consistent series of her career in the discus throw and topped out at 46.44 meters, the best by a BU woman in 36 years to place her seventh at the meet and second all-time in program history. Graduate student Bridget Bishop had the second-best outdoor shot put performance of her career at 13.81 meters and Kowalski's toss of 12.47 meters was her best-ever outdoor mark. Kowalski also entered the BU top-10 list in the hammer throw with a mark of 47.76 meters, good for fourth.
Hamilton placed fifth in the high jump at 1.70 and fellow freshmen
Ryan Rosenberger and
Sam Roszak tied for 14th in the long jump (6.74 meters).
UMass Lowell Invitational
Numerous Terriers competed in the UMass Lowell Invitational with four of them earning event wins.
Sophomore Juliana Nakouzi won the discus throw with a personal record of 40.65, good for sixth all-time at BU.
Freshman
Gabe Hickman took first in the shot put with a toss of 16.74 meters to place him seventh in the BU record book.
Senior
Declan Ritzenthaler finished first in the pole vault at 4.80 meters and freshman Emily Catlett won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:04.66.
There were two new entries on BU's women's pole vault top-10 list as freshmen Cailey Spanitz (3.40m) and Robin Rosen (3.25m) are now tied for fourth and ninth, respectively, after finishing 2-3 at the meet.
Senior
Dave Vovor set a personal record in the hammer throw (43.31m) and he and classmate
Fred Lu had their best-ever outdoor marks in the shot put (Lu – 14.56m, Vovor – 13.80m).
Sophomore
Jack Frisbie moved into 10th on BU's all-time list in the high jump with a mark of 1.91 meters.
