Softball Bats Explode in DH Sweep over Penn and Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. – Extending the win streak to a season-high five games, the Boston University softball team combined for 27 hits and 21 runs in a doubleheader sweep over Penn and Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday evening at the Titans' Anderson Family Field.

The Terriers (10-10) used three-run homers from seniors Emily Gant (inside-the-park) and Nicole Amodio to knock off the Quakers (2-9) in a 9-1 run-rule victory and then posted a season-high 14 hits in the 12-3 win over a Titan (14-8) squad that previously defeated two top-15 teams (Arizona, Northwestern) and ranked No. 28 in the initial RPI release on Monday. Junior Allison Boaz followed up on classmate Lizzy Avery's six strikeouts in five innings against Penn with a one-inning save and then scattered CSUF's seven hits over seven innings for a complete-game victory.

Hours after repeating as Patriot League Player of the Week, Roncin led BU with a combined five hits and five RBIs while reaching home plate twice. Graduate student Jen Horita, Gant and senior Aliyah Huerta-Leipner all earned four hits apiece while combining for 11 runs scored.

GAME 1: BU 9, Penn 1 (6 innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Avery retired the side to start the game, Horita led off with a single and took second on a throwing error before scoring on Roncin's single through the right side.
  • Sophomore Lauren Keleher reached on a fielding error, and Gant then cleared the bases with an inside the park homer to left center for the 4-0 advantage.
  • The Quakers loaded the bases in the top of the second on two singles and error with one out, but Avery ended the threat with a strikeout and ground out.
  • Penn got on the scoreboard in the fifth on a single, wild pitch and two-out RBI single. The Quakers tried to stretch the at-bat into a double, but BU was able to get the out on an 8-2-6 rundown.
  • The Terriers responded in the bottom half with Gant singling up the middle to plate freshman pinch runner Tyesha Williams, who replaced Amodio at first following a single to left.
  • Penn made one last gasp with back-to-back lead-off singles against Avery in the sixth, but Boaz shut the door with a pair of strikeouts and fly out.
  • Huerta-Leipner started the sixth by doubling to right and taking third on Horita's bunt single.
  • After Roncin singled to center, Amodio walked off with a three-run bomb to right for BU's third run-rule victory.
GAME 2: BU 12, Cal State Fullerton 3

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Coker was stranded in scoring position in both the first and third following a pair of hits, as both teams were scoreless through the first three innings.
  • BU grabbed the lead for good against 2021 All-West Coast Conference First Team honoree Myka Sutherlin (4-3) in the fourth after BU loaded the bases on Gant's walk, Huerta-Leipner's single and graduate student Marina Sylvestri's two-out walk.
  • After checking her swing on a tough two-strike pitch, Horita put a ball in play to Sutherlin, who threw it away to let two runs scored.
  • Roncin followed with a two-RBI single for the 4-0 advantage.
  • The Titans hit a lead-off double in the fourth, but BU was able to turn a 6-3-5 double play as the advancing runner tried to reach third on a routine grounder to third.
  • BU loaded the bases again in the fifth with a pair of walks and Gant's single before Gargicevich-Almeida delivered an RBI sac fly.
  • Huerta-Leipner forced a rundown trying to steal second, which led to Gant scoring in time before the third out.
  • The Titans cut the deficit in half with the help of four singles and error against Boaz, who kept two on base with a ground out.
  • After Boaz quickly retired in the sixth, BU put the game away in the seventh with six runs off six hits and an error.
UP NEXT
  • BU will next visit Long Beach State on Thursday (March 10) at 5:30 p.m. ET in the Louisville Slugger Tournament opener.
