BOSTON – Fresh off the 2022 season opener, the Boston University women's soccer program remains home to welcome Providence to Terrier Town on Sunday (Aug. 21). Opening kick is set for 6 p.m.
The two sides square off for the second year in a row, which last occurred from 2013-16. The match marks the Friars' first road test of the campaign, while the Terriers host their second home tilt in the young season.

TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU dropped its first game of the year to Northeastern, 1-0, back on Thursday (Aug. 18).
- The Terriers outshot the Huskies 15-6, including 7-3 in shots on goal, but Northeastern's tally off a corner kick in the 48th minute made the difference.
- Graduate students Jenna Oldham and Amy Thompson paced the team with four shots, while senior Sophia Woodland and junior Lily Matthews each laced two shots on target.
- Senior Gretchen Bennett started the second half in goal and made two saves.
- In 14 of her 21 career games, Bennett has stopped multiple shots.
- Sophomore Celia Braun started the game between the posts, but only faced one shot, tying her career-best and marking the third such instance.
- Twenty-one Terriers made an appearance on the pitch.
- BU also held an advantage in corner kicks, 8-5. The Terriers won that category nine times a season ago.
- On three occasions in 2021, BU followed up a loss with a win the next game.
- The Terriers are in the midst of playing three matches at home within a four-game span. Four of BU's first six contests are at Nickerson Field.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
- The Friars head to Boston following a 1-0 triumph over Patriot League foe Colgate on Thursday (Aug. 18).
- Ava Brandt scored the lone goal in the 14th minute off a cross from Elayna Grillakis.
- Providence's back line limited the Raiders to just three shots, none of which were on goal.
- The Friars were selected to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll after earning an at-large bid in the 2021 NCAA Tournament, going 10-7-3 with a 5-3-2 conference record.
- Meg Hughes was recognized on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, and was named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Players to Watch for forwards. The junior paced Providence with 22 points last season on nine goals and four assists.
SERIES HISTORY
- Sunday marks the eighth all-time meeting between BU and Providence in a series that started in 1997.
- This is the first matchup that will take place in the month of August, making it the earliest in the season between the programs.
- The Terriers sport the 5-2 edge in the rivalry, though the Friars have won two in a row.
- BU is undefeated at home against Providence, taking victories in 1997, 2013, and 2015.
- In the last bout featuring the teams, the Friars won 5-1 on Sep. 9, 2021 on the strength of four second-half goals.
