NEWTON, Mass. – The Boston University field hockey team opened its 2022 season with a 2-1 victory over Providence in a lightning-delayed game on Friday afternoon at Newton Campus Field.
Â
Down 1-0 at the half, the Terriers secured the victory by getting third-quarter goals from junior
Tess Csejka and sophomore
Payton Anderson.
Â
With 10:27 left in regulation, lightning moved into the area and the game was put on hold for 3 hours and 22 minutes before the teams returned to the field.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- PC used the first corner of the game to get on the board first as an initial shot was saved by senior Caroline Kelly before Cami Crook collected the rebound and scored from eight yards out on the right side in the 13th minute.
- The Terriers created a pair of chances in the second quarter but shots by Csejka and junior Thalia Steenssens were stopped by PC's Asia Porter.
- The Friars threatened to extend the lead right before halftime but an attempt in close by Caroline Krebs went just wide of the cage.
- A midfield turnover led to the game-tying goal as freshman Martu Coulo stole the ball and pushed it up the left side to senior Mikayla Crowley, who found Csejka at the near post, where the junior elevated a shot past the reach of Porter at the 31:44 mark.
- BU earned a corner in the 42nd minute and used it to pot the equalizer as Anderson blasted a shot the left side of the cage from the top of the circle on assists from senior Ellie McIntyre and Steenssens.
- The Friars had chance to equalize on a corner in the final seconds of the third but their attempt went wide right.
- Neither team recorded a shot in the final quarter as the teams played the first 4:33 of the frame before lightning moved into the area to force the lengthy delay.
