Terriers Can't Top Wildcats In 4-1 Loss At UNH

DURHAM, N.H. - Freshman Giulianna Gianino scored her third goal of the season, but the Boston University women's soccer program fell to New Hampshire 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.

With the loss, the Terriers fall to 3-5 on the season. The Wildcats close the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 3-4 record.

UNH carried a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Gianino found the back of the net in the 53rd minute on assists from junior Lily Matthews and sophomore Morgan Fagan. However, the Wildcats ended the game with three unanswered goals.

Senior goalkeeper Gretchen Bennett made two first-half saves in the effort. Redshirt senior Amy Thompson and junior Abigail McNulty each had a team-best two shots.

Meghan Guarente contributed to every UNH score, tallying a hat trick to go with an assist. Elaina Grenz also found the back of the net for the Wildcats.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Matthews fired the first shot of the game 1:28 in, sending it from the top-right corner of the penalty box to UNH keeper Cat Sheppard by the left post.
  • Approaching the seventh minute, McNulty got free at the top of the box for a low-angle chance that Sheppard easily secured. On the UNH counter, redshirt senior Jenna Oldham blocked a Wildcat shot from the left corner.
  • Bennett's saves came around the 12th minute, with her latter attempt a diving play to her right to corral Emily Bini's shot.
  • The senior then dispossessed a bolting UNH attacker coming through the middle of the field before a shot could be unleashed in the 21st minute.
  • BU's defense had trouble clearing the ball in its own end in the 28th minute, and Guarente collected the ball to tuck her shot into right post for a 1-0 UNH edge.
  • On BU's goal, Fagan burst down the right sideline and crossed the ball into the box. Matthews dropped it off for Gianino by the left side of the box, and the rookie beat Sheppard to the left post for the equalizer.
  • Just 2:23 later, after McNulty had a shot saved, Bennett came out of the net to break up a UNH scoring chance, but the ball found its way near the left post for Guarente, who buried the ball to put the Wildcats up 2-1.
  • In the 62nd minute, Guarente sent a lead pass down the middle to a cutting Grenz, and the freshman scored in the top-right corner to extend UNH's advantage to 3-1.
  • UNH capped the scoring in the 82nd minute when Anna Hewlett and Keegan Mayer set up a play for Guarente.
