Terriers Come Back To Defeat Leopards In PL Opener, 2-1

EASTON, Pa. - Behind second-half goals from sophomore Morgan Fagan and redshirt senior Amy Thompson, the Boston University women's soccer program took down Lafayette 2-1 in both teams' Patriot League opener on Saturday afternoon at Oaks Stadium.

After the Leopards (2-6-1, 0-1-0 PL) scored 6:36 into the game, the Terriers (4-5-0, 1-0-0 PL) scored twice within a 3:49 span to secure their first Patriot League road-opening win in 10 seasons as a league member.

Thompson paced BU with three shots, two of which were on target. Fagan and junior Abigail McNulty each recorded two shots, while redshirt senior Jenna Oldham tallied her first assist of the season on Fagan's score.

Sara Oswald registered the Leopards' lone score on the day. Lafayette goalkeepers Natalie Neumann and Lindsay Dewer each made two saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU generated its first corner kick 1:42 into the game, and the possession led to a Thompson shot that Neumann denied.
  • Lafayette took the lead as Haley Pursel found Oswald, who beat Terrier keeper Celia Braun in the seventh minute.
  • Beginning in the 14th minute, the Terriers ripped off four consecutive corner kicks, with the last leading to a chance for McNulty that was sent high in the 17th minute.
  • McNulty attempted another shot in the 32nd minute, but Neumann was there for the save.
  • Freshman Natalie Godoy and Lafayette's Anna Garcia each rifled shots in the final three minutes of the first half, but were off-target.
  • The Terriers earned a corner in the 57th minute, but the Leopard defense sent the ball away. BU was awarded another at the 57:09 mark, and Fagan took Oldham's pass and buried it into the back of the net 50 seconds later to knot the game at 1-1.
  • Senior Kayla Ross' shot was corralled by Dewar, but 36 seconds later, Thompson scored to put the Terriers on top 2-1.
  • Sophomore Eileen Solomon had a chance to give the visitors a two-goal lead with her chance in the 79th minute following a corner, but she sent the ball out top.
  • April McDonald attempted to tie the match for Lafayette in the 82nd minute, but her shot sailed over the crossbar.
