Women’s Soccer Opens October Against Lehigh

BOSTON – To open the month of October, the Boston University women's soccer program welcomes Lehigh to Nickerson Field on Saturday (Oct. 1). Opening kick is set for 1 p.m.
 
Saturday is BU's final home game before the start of a three-game road stretch. In its last five regular season home matches against Patriot League opponents, the Terriers are 4-0-1.
 
Lehigh enters the contest having won four of its last five games. The Mountain Hawks are 2-2-1 in road matches in 2022.
 
The game marks Alumni Day for the Terriers. BU will welcome back alumnae and their families for a halftime ceremony, followed by a postgame reception. The Department of Athletics will also recognize former head coach Nancy Feldman, who guided the Terriers to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances in 27 seasons at the helm.
 
TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU is coming off a 1-0 triumph over Navy on Sept. 24 in Terrier Town.
  • Redshirt senior Amy Thompson found the back of the net in the 84th minute off a feed from junior Abigail McNulty.
  • Sophomore Celia Braun made a career-high 10 saves between the posts, including a penalty kick stop in the final minute of the first half.
  • Those 10 saves are the most by a Patriot League goalkeeper in 2022, as of writing.
  • Thompson is the reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week thanks to her third goal of the season.
  • With her honor, five Terriers have earned a weekly award this season, the most by a Patriot League side in 2022.
  • The other Terriers to win a weekly award are McNulty (Offensive Player – Aug. 29), senior Sophia Woodland (Midfielder – Aug. 22), redshirt senior Jenna Oldham (Defensive Player – Sept. 19), and freshman Giulianna Gianino (Rookie – Aug. 22 and 29).
  • Braun has started in all seven of her appearances this season, registering a 1.50 goals-against average and .714 save percentage.
  • BU is up to 10th in the nation with 7.36 corner kicks per game. The Terriers are also third in the Patriot League with five shots on target per contest.
  • The first head coach in program history, Feldman helped guide the Terriers to 326 wins and 13 conference tournament championships. She helped developed eight All-Americans, and 31 Terriers were conference major award winners.
 
SCOUTING LEHIGH
  • The Mountain Hawks are 2-1 in league action and 4-4-1 overall, most recently coming off a 1-0 victory at Holy Cross on Sept. 24.
  • Lehigh also defeated Lafayette 2-0 and fell to Army 1-0 to start PL play.
  • Ryelle Shuey is the reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, and leads the team with three goals this year.
  • Maggie Ousouljoglou has played the majority of minutes in goal, tallying a .725 save percentage and 1.29 goals-against average.
  • The Mountain Hawks were projected to finish sixth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll after finishing 2021 with a 6-10-1 record, going 4-4-1 against league foes and reaching the Patriot League quarterfinal round.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Saturday marks the 10th all-time meeting between BU and Lehigh in a series that began when the Terriers joined the Patriot League in 2013.
  • BU is 6-1-2 in the rivalry, having gone 5-1-1 in the last seven games.
  • The Terriers are a perfect 4-0 at home against the Mountain Hawks, outscoring Lehigh 8-0 in those matches.
  • In total, BU has a 12-3 scoring margin against Lehigh.
  • BU was victorious 1-0 in the last matchup on Oct. 1, 2021. Oldham missed a penalty kick in the 78th minute, but deposited her own rebound. Braun and Gretchen Bennett combined for one save in 90 minutes.
