SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Boston University women's tennis team split its opening weekend when it dropped a 6-1 decision at Syracuse on Sunday. In the loss, the Terriers picked up one win in both doubles and singles.
 
Even though the Orange (2-0) secured the doubles point with wins in the Nos. 1 and 2 spots, BU (1-1) was able to pick up a win at the bottom of the doubles lineup. Junior Victoria Carlsten and freshman Navya Vadlamudi took down Shiori Ito and Polina Kozyreva in a 7-5 result to earn the win. Carlsten and Vadlamudi led BU in doubles this weekend and the pair now sit at 2-0.
 
In singles, Syracuse won on three courts in straight sets to seal the victory. Play continued on the remaining courts and the Orange picked up two additional wins.
 
Syracuse took the win in the No. 1 spot in straight sets, but Carlsten fought hard in the No. 3 spot against Viktor Kanapatskaya. After dropping the first set 6-3, the Terrier forced a super tiebreak with a 6-3 second-set win. The super tiebreak was closely contested, but ultimately Kanapatskaya won the set 1-0 (8) to give Syracuse its sixth and final point of the match.
 
On Court 4, junior Kaitlin Tan battled against Shiori Ito. Tan and Ito split sets with the first going to Ito 6-2 and the second going to Tan 7-5. In the super tiebreak, Tan bested Ito 1-0 (7) to get BU on the board and bring the final score to Syracuse 6, BU 1.
 
The Terriers will next return to Massachusetts on Saturday (Jan. 28) and face Bucknell at the Winchester Indoor Tennis Center for a 6 p.m. Patriot League matchup.
