Terriers Notch Five Top-10 Program Marks at John Thomas Terrier Classic

BOSTON – The Boston University men's track & field team posted four first-place finishes and five top-10 program times at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Friday. Freshmen Michal Onilogbo and Logan Popelka, sophomore Steven Franco and grad student Aksel Laudon all ran top-10 BU times at the meet.
 
In the 800m race, junior Luke Hanratty led BU with a 27th-place finish and time of 1:54.19. Also running for BU were grad student Hayden Jennings (1:54.39) and junior Max Gorriaran (1:57.31). The highlight of the field was Texas' Crayton Carrozza who set the new facility record with a time of 1:46.28.
 
Franco competed in the 60m hurdles and ran an 8.43 in the prelims to advance to the finals. He ran an 8.30 in the finals to place sixth and record a personal best time in the event. He remains the fifth-best in program history in the 60m hurdles with the improvement.
 
The 400m dash featured the second Top-10 Terrier time of the meet. Popelka continued his impressive season and set the fifth-best time in program history with a 47.14.
 
In the 200m dash, Onilogbo took first with a time of 21.45 to tie the eighth-best time in BU history. Placing ninth was junior Dakota Jackson (21.98) and finishing 17th was sophomore Leon Christian (22.14).
 
After breaking a top-10 program mark at the Battle in Beantown, this season's 4x400m relay team moved up to the fifth-best time. Freshman Liam Gair, Christian, Gorriaran and Popelka ran to a 3:12.76 to take first in the event.
 
On the field, junior Adam Madro competed in the pole vault for the first time this season and cleared 3.95m (12' 11.5") to place fifth. In the long jump, Franco led the Terriers with a sixth-place finish by jumping 6.67m (21' 10.75"). Also competing were grad student Kasim Cisse (6.28m (20' 7.25")) and junior Stuart Bladon (6.01m (19' (8.75")).
 
Grad student Aksel Laudon led BU in the mile. Racing in the second heat, Laudon crossed the finish line with a time of 4:01.39, good for 19th place. His time was not only a personal best but set the seventh-best mile time in program history. Seven additional Terriers competed in the mile. Notably, freshmen Parker Schneider (4:07.74) and Freddy Collins (4:07.93) placed 49th and 50th, respectively. Close behind was grad student Marcel Aubry (4:08.52) who finished 53rd.
 
Sophomore Cole Tucker was the top performer for BU in the shot put. He placed first with a throw of 16.25m (53' 3.75"). Franco finished 18th with a throw of 12.99m (42' 7.5") and Bladon finished 25th with a throw of 11.01m (36' 1.5").
 
The 3000m race featured a highly competitive field. The new facility record and American record of 7:28.24 was set by Yared Nuguse of On Athletics Club and Northern Arizona's Drew Bosley set the new collegiate record with a time of 7:36.42. For BU, senior Foster Malleck led the Terriers with an 8:04.93 for a personal best time. 
 
In the final event of the meet, the 5000m race, another American record was set. Nike's Woody Kincaid ran a 12:58.10 to set the second American record of the day.
 
The John Thomas Terrier Classic will continue Saturday (Jan. 28) with the women's events beginning at 11 a.m. The men's team will be back in action on Friday (Feb. 3) for the distance medley relay as part of the Bruce Lehane Scarlet & White Invite which will begin at 8 p.m.
