Lehigh Tops Men's Basketball, 66-55

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Despite graduate student Fletcher Tynen earning his second career double-double, the Boston University men's basketball team fell at Lehigh, 66-55, on Sunday afternoon.

The Mountain Hawks (13-8, 8-2 PL) went 21-of-24 from the charity stripe and held the Terriers (10-13, 3-7 PL) to 25.9 percent shooting during the second half to overcome a 38-30 deficit and extend their win streak to eight games. Entering the contest rank 22nd nationally at 38.3 3FG%, Lehigh was limited to 23.8 3FG% and 36.5 FG% overall but outscored BU off turnovers, 20-2.

Tynen posted a career-high 15 points and hauled in a career-tying 10 rebounds to help BU win the battle at the boards, 36-30. Graduate student Walter Whyte added to Tynen's two 3-pointers with the Terriers' other trey to claim a team-high 17 points.

Lehigh featured four men in double figures with Keith Higgins Jr. posting a game-high 19 points. Higgins, Evan Taylor (13), Tyler Whitney-Sidney (13) and Jalin Sinclair (10) combined for a perfect 18-of-18 at the free throw line, as Dominic Parlin posted nine points and team-high seven rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lehigh earned an early 6-2 lead and extended it to 16-10 on Parolin's layup at 11:37.
  • Freshman Ben Roy followed junior Caelan Jones' jumper with one of his own to keep the Mountain Hawks within striking distance.
  • The Terriers eventually grabbed their first lead, 23-22, at 4:41 on Whyte's free throw that was preceded by senior Nevin Zink's two free throws.
  • Whyte scored the last four points from the charity stripe over the final 1:48 to enter the locker room ahead, 27-26.
  • BU started the second half on a strong note with sophomore Malcolm Chimezie hitting a layup and Tynen adding a 3-pointer.
  • After Lehigh scored four quick points in response, Whyte drained his 3-pointer and Tynen converted on a 3-point play to grab BU's largest lead, 38-30, with 16:47 remaining in regulation.
  • With the Mountain Hawks chipping away, Whitney-Sidney grabbed the lead for good, 43-40, with a game-tying layup at 12:05 and then a 3-pointer at 11:14.
  • Clinging to a 54-51 lead with 3:07 remaining, the Mountain Hawks found Taylor for a layup and added four more points over the next minute after BU missed a pair of attempts from behind the arc to pull away.
GAME NOTES
  • Whyte is now just nine points away from tying Max Mahoney ('20) for No. 8 all-time in the record book at 1,559 points. He also just needs one more 3-pointer to tie Carlos Strong ('10) for No. 10 at 179 career treys.
  • Graduate student Jonas Harper scored seven points to move into a three-way tie for 36th at 1,024 points.
  • Tynen earned his second double-double of the season after previously tallying 14 points and 10 rebounds in a 73-69 OT win over Lafayette.
